Underground Operator/Directional Drill Locator Job Description
Classification/Position Type:
Non-exempt/Full-Time/Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (40 Hours/Week) with occasional evening and weekend overtime.

Operations Director
Overview:
Working under the direct supervision of the Operations Director, the Directional Drill Locator will be responsible for conducting preliminary site walks to identify potential hazards as well as locating and piloting the directional drill head for placement of conduit. The incumbent will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the company's goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner as per SEL Constructions policies and procedures while exceeding the expectations of our clients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Directional Drill Locator will be responsible for determining the bore path and depth while collaborating closely with the driller to ensure successful completion of drilling operations. The following duties (not exclusive) will also be:
- Safe and efficient operation of drill locator equipment (including, but not limited to Directional Drill, Backhoe/Excavator, Skid Steer, Tractor Trailer, Vacuum Truck/Trailer) to accurately install underground utilities, conduit, and other infrastructure components.
- Responsible for clearing job site debris, brush, or any other obstacles; planning construction path and flagging utility locations.
- Contact property owners and/or utility companies in the event of un-locatable private lines.
- Responsible for the calibration and maintenance of sonde beacon on Directional Drill
- Safely load/unload tools, materials, and equipment on truck
- Set up safety perimeter using signage, cones, and safety barriers. If necessary, direct traffic.
- Safe and efficient operation of line locating and leak detection instruments when necessary.
- Understanding plans, specifications, contracts, blueprints, safety documents and any other workplace or job site related documentation pertaining to each job.
Core Competencies and Qualifications:
- Demonstrate efficient critical thinking skills while identifying and mitigating safety hazards, code violations and other potential issues.
- Ability to perform and/or instruction entry-level skills and practices.
- Possess strong working knowledge of job site safety with the ability to thoroughly evaluate potential hazards and complete pre-work task planning with an emphasis on proper safety procedures.
- Proficient knowledge of highway traffic control standards
- Valid California Driver License and clean driving record
- Minimum 2 years experience as a Directional Drill Locator
- Strong understanding of drilling procedures, safety protocols and industry best practices
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ability to read and interpret drilling plans, blueprints, specifications, AT&T and/or CATV design prints.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and adapt to changing job site requirements.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to five (5) days a week within the state of California.

Travel Requirements:
This position will require frequent, mandatory short and long-distance travel within the state of California, up to 5 days a week. The ability to travel is mandatory.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed to ongoing construction and various weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to do the following:
- Verbally speak and/or listen.
- Stand, walk, sit, crouch, kneel, stoop, crawl, climb and bend and lift and move up to 50lbs frequently and daily.
- Use repetitive hand to finger movements.
- Handle and/or feel tools, equipment, etc.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include, but are not limited to,
- Up close vision, reading, color deciphering and identification.
- Distant vision, reading, color deciphering and identification.
- Peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
