Position Summary
Under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist, performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) simulation procedures where applicable, in conjunction with radiation therapy standards. Provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by physician according to established standards and practices. Therapy may contain of any or all the following procedures: IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), SRS (Stereotactic Radiation Surgery), SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy), TBI (Total Body Irradiation Therapy), TBE (Total Body Skin Electrons Therapy), High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) and CT based simulation procedures. Participates in all MRI and/or Radiation Oncology related clinical research protocols and ensures that patient and staff safety is maintained. Functions as a Clinical Instructor and Supervisor of Therapy Students.
Key Responsibilities include:
Delivers a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy to patients of all ages.
Prepares room and equipment for patient
Enters patient data at the start of examination and monitors data acquisition during procedure
Explains procedure
Answers patient questions
Maintains visual and audio communications with patient during treatment
Observes patient for any unusual reactions or events
Observes radiation safety measures for patient and personnel
Maintain records of examination data and other pertinent information on patients
Provides patient safety as required
Assist with patient scheduling
Operates MRI control console for each patients scan, including selection of proper imaging techniques and operates various peripheral hardware (where applicable)
Transfers, positions, and instructs patient regarding MRI and/or radiation therapy procedures to obtain the appropriate treatment planning image quality as specified by a physicians
Assists Radiation Oncologist in therapeutic research programs utilizing MRI guidance
Reinforces recommendations given to patient by healthcare professional concerning reaction to treatment and care of radiated area, prevention, or treatment of generalized and local side effects
Performs simulation procedures as prescribed by physician and assist in dosimetry procedures
Assists in research and development of clinical studies directly related to departmental services
Performs diagnostic testing on equipment, general maintenance, and quality assurance as is appropriate for an MRI Technologist or Radiation Therapist
Performs daily quality assurance checks on linear accelerators, reporting any variation in morning warm-up.
Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed
Responsible for equipment calibration checks/field uniformity, and reporting/scheduling equipment maintenance as necessary
Completes and processes billings for patient treatments, setups, and simulations
Assists in the education and training of radiation therapy students
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings and workshops
Participates in staff educational programs
Attends meetings as required and participate in the department continuing education program Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Licensed by the California State Department of Health (Certified in Radiation Therapy)
Registration by ARRT plus 24 months course in radiologic technology
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (adult and pediatric)
