Primary Responsibilities
Act as internal/external technical contact for complete melting process for Titanium base alloys. This includes responsibility for raw materials, Electron Beam Cold Hearth melting (EBCH). Provide support for formulation, conditioning, and preparatory operations.
Provide technical support in resolving process-related non-conformances and customer complaints. Support the maintenance and standardization of operating instructions, mill instructions, and related equipment recipes. Establish, monitor, and maintain statistical process control (SPC) limits for key products and processes within the melt and remelt departments.
Lead or participate in customer audits of the company's manufacturing facilities and supplier facilities, team-based continuous improvement activities including risk assessments (RAA), problem solving reports (PSR), process audits, and standard work.
Develop an understanding of various alloys and their specific melt related characteristics and behaviors, melting/remelting equipment capabilities and applications as well as evaluate impact of melt parameter changes/process improvements.
Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to develop improvements to manufacturing processes and standards that enhance safety in the workplace, equipment performance, and product quality.
Plan, execute and manage product/process continuous improvement programs that support several value streams using Plan-Do-Check-Act approach. Utilize statistical data analysis, process modeling, and sub/full-scale trials to support initiatives.
Communicate results in a timely manner to management, operations, colleagues, and customers in the form of written reports and oral presentations. Support internal/external customers by analyzing process data, chemistry data, and non-destructive testing data.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications (what we require)
B.S. in Metallurgical, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering.
Preferences (what we prefer)
B.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering with a metal's focus. Candidates with additional 3+ years' work experience (helpful, but not required). Working knowledge of cast-wrought processing (i.e., conventional primary melting, secondary remelting, press forging, radial forging, hot rolling, conditioning, heat treatment, etc.) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong technical background, technical writing, and oral presentation skills. Focus on metals, processing, and structure/property relationships. Eager to become a technical expert & primary point of contact in area of responsibility.
Comfortable being on the shop floor observing processes, providing guidance, and interfacing with operators. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and requirements to shop floor personnel in a clear, concise manner.
Self-starter and ability to work independently as well as on a team. Project planning skills. Uses scientifically rigorous, data driven approach to problem solving.
Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure while maintaining composure and meeting established deadlines. Open to continuing education opportunities (e.g., remelt modeling, statistical data analysis, technical conferences, etc.).
Statistical data analysis experience using JMP, Minitab, or related software. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point).
