The Pediatric ECMO Specialist RN is a critical care nurse trained to operate extracorporeal life support (ECLS/ECMO) systems in high-acuity pediatric settings. This role supports the delivery of life-saving interventions during emergency situations by managing ECMO circuits, monitoring patient responses, and ensuring optimal performance of all related equipment. The RN functions as a key member of the interdisciplinary care team, contributing to high standards of patient safety, clinical excellence, and compassionate care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates ECMO machinery and manages extracorporeal life support during critical procedures in pediatric intensive care environments.

  • Assesses, monitors, and documents patient conditions, ECMO circuit parameters, and response to treatment.

  • Participates in emergent and urgent interventions, acting swiftly and effectively in high-pressure scenarios.

  • Collaborates with physicians, respiratory therapists, and perfusionists to coordinate and implement ECMO treatment plans.

  • Assists in the weaning process and discontinuation of ECMO support, as appropriate.

  • Contributes to quality improvement efforts, data tracking, and evaluation of clinical outcomes.

  • Provides patient and family education related to critical care and ECMO support.

  • Acts as a mentor and preceptor to junior nurses and team members.

  • Adheres to nursing best practices, regulatory standards, and hospital protocols.

  • Engages in ongoing professional development and competency training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

  • Additional certifications (e.g., PALS, ACLS, or ECMO-specific training) may be required based on unit protocols

Experience:

  • RN I: <1 year of experience

  • RN II: 13 years

  • RN III: 310 years

  • RN IV: 10+ years

  • Prior experience in pediatric ICU or neonatal ICU preferred

  • ECMO or critical care experience highly desirable

Skills:

  • Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking in fast-paced settings

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

  • Proficiency in managing life support systems and interpreting patient data

  • Ability to remain calm and efficient during emergency situations
