About the job Marketplace General Manager

Location: San Francisco, CA — In Person

Employment: Full-time
Experience: 2–6+ years
Compensation: $130,000–$180,000 + equity

About the Role

We're looking for a highly entrepreneurial Marketplace General Manager to build and scale a marketplace from the ground up.

This is a hands-on, 01 role spanning strategy, product, operations, partnerships, distribution, and revenue. You'll own the marketplace end-to-end—from solving the initial cold-start problem and building the vendor ecosystem to improving conversion and developing the commercial model.

This role is ideal for a founder-minded operator who moves quickly, experiments constantly, and thrives with significant ownership and ambiguity.

What You'll Do

  • Build and launch a marketplace from 01.
  • Own marketplace strategy, execution, and key business metrics.
  • Solve supply-and-demand and marketplace cold-start challenges.
  • Build and manage relationships with vendors, SMBs, and strategic partners.
  • Develop commercial models, including pricing, commissions, and take rates.
  • Work closely with product and engineering to improve the marketplace experience.
  • Optimize merchandising, positioning, conversion, and customer engagement.
  • Design and run experiments to identify new growth and distribution opportunities.
  • Develop repeatable playbooks for launching and scaling new markets.
  • Own marketplace economics and contribute to P&L performance.
  • Spend time directly with customers and partners to understand their needs.
  • Travel to key markets as needed.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience building or operating 01 products, marketplaces, businesses, or new markets.
  • Strong understanding of marketplace dynamics and cold-start problems.
  • Experience building vendor, SMB, partnership, or supply-side relationships.
  • Strong commercial instincts and comfort with P&L, unit economics, and business metrics.
  • Product intuition and understanding of customer behavior and conversion.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify opportunities and run experiments.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • High agency and ability to operate effectively without a predefined playbook.
  • Comfortable working across product, operations, partnerships, and strategy.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, early-stage environment.

Strong Candidates May Come From

  • Founding or early-stage startup teams.
  • Marketplace companies.
  • Consumer technology companies.
  • City or market-launch roles.
  • General management or business operations.
  • Product-led businesses with significant commercial ownership.
  • SMB-focused distribution or partnerships roles.

Previous founder experience is a plus but not required. We care more about evidence of ownership, resourcefulness, and exceptional execution than a specific title or career path.

You'll Thrive Here If You

  • Prefer building from scratch over maintaining established systems.
  • Naturally take ownership without waiting for direction.
  • Learn through experimentation and move quickly from idea to execution.
  • Are equally comfortable analyzing numbers, improving a product, and negotiating with partners.
  • Enjoy solving ambiguous problems.
  • Care deeply about the customer and want direct exposure to the people using what you build.
  • Want significant responsibility and the opportunity to shape a business from its earliest stages.
