COMPETENCIES:

The Psychiatrist must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Theories and principles of human behavior, psychopathology, diagnostics categories, family systems theory and mental illness.
  • Basic and general principles of medicine and health.
  • A thorough knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychoactive medications, their use and dosages.
  • A broad array of treatment methodologies and the health and mental health service system.
  • The clinical management and supervision of allied professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Management of acute-care and hospitalized patients.
  • Management of psychiatric emergencies.

The Psychiatrist must demonstrate skills in:

  • Listening to, interpreting and implementing clinical interventions.
  • Presenting information and responding to questions from individuals, families, colleagues and the general community.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides initial psychiatric diagnoses and assessments in emergency and non-emergency situations in both acute care and sub-acute care situations.
  • Provides medication management and other treatment interventions to clients and patients directly.
  • Provides coaching, instructions and direction to allied professional and paraprofessional staff and leads clinical team meetings.
  • Consults with general medical professionals regarding the psychiatric condition of their patients.
  • Rotates on call with other members of the clinical staff.
  • Provides professional services to patients hospitalized at St. Anthony Memorial Behavioral
  • Medicine or other designated in-patient units.
  • Attends and participates in and supports Medical Staff meetings and other committee assignments as may be directed by the Director, Medical Staff.
  • Assists in Performance Quality Improvement efforts of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts professional practice that is in compliance with the rules, regulations and by-laws and the standard of care that exists in Northwest Indiana and the Greater Chicago metropolitan area.
  • Assists in peer review and other assignments.
  • Attends to the required continuing education elements for the specialty certification and licensure of physicians and psychiatrists.
  • Maintains and completes clinical record keeping duties as described in either the Medical Staff By-laws or in compliance with the organizations policies and procedures.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

Maintains credentials as required by certifying/licensing body. Participates in professional development and in-service programs as required by position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A current license to practice medicine in the State of Indiana.
  • A current license in the United States to prescribe medications.
  • Completion of an accredited Training Residency in Psychiatry.
  • Eligibility for and/or certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Positive references from past professors and/or supervisors.
