Position purpose
The Diesel Motor Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, servicing and repair of Beltana Farming WA's diesel-powered agricultural machinery, vehicles and associated mechanical equipment. The position supports safe and reliable year-round farming operations by reducing machinery downtime and ensuring equipment is prepared for seeding, spraying, harvest and livestock activities.
Key responsibilities
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults in tractors, harvesters, sprayers, loaders, utilities and other agricultural machinery.
- Service, maintain and repair diesel engines and associated fuel, cooling, lubrication and exhaust systems.
- Inspect, repair and replace transmissions, driveline components, steering, suspension, braking and hydraulic systems.
- Carry out scheduled and preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer requirements and the farm's operating program.
- Attend machinery breakdowns in the workshop and field, identify the cause of failure and complete safe and timely repairs.
- Test machinery following repairs and make adjustments to confirm safe and effective operation.
- Inspect machinery before seeding, spraying and harvest and complete required servicing, repairs and component replacement.
- Use welding, machining and fabrication techniques to repair or adapt mechanical components where appropriate and safe.
- Maintain accurate service, repair and parts records and report recurring faults or equipment requiring major work.
- Identify required replacement parts and consumables, obtain quotations and coordinate parts ordering with management.
- Maintain workshop tools and work areas and comply with work health and safety procedures when performing mechanical work.
Seasonal Work Cycle
Operating period & Mechanical focus
Before seeding and harvest - Comprehensive inspections, scheduled servicing, replacement of worn components and preparation of machinery for sustained operation.
During seeding and harvest - Rapid fault diagnosis, field repairs, breakdown response and essential servicing to minimise operational downtime.
After each season - Post-season inspections, major repairs, component overhauls, cleaning and assessment of machinery wear.
Between peak periods - Preventative maintenance, hydraulic and electrical repairs, vehicle servicing, workshop work, records and preparation for the next production cycle.
Qualifications and experience
- Relevant trade qualification or equivalent demonstrated diesel-mechanical training and experience.
- Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing diesel engines, heavy vehicles, plant or agricultural machinery.
- Experience diagnosing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults using appropriate tools and testing procedures.
- Ability to work independently and respond to breakdowns in workshop and field environments.
- Current driver's licence, with agricultural machinery experience highly regarded.
Work environment
The position involves work in a farm workshop and in field conditions. It requires the safe use of hand and power tools, lifting equipment and diagnostic equipment, as well as work around heavy machinery. Some additional hours may be required during seeding, harvest or urgent breakdowns, subject to the employment contract and applicable workplace requirements.
