The Company
Our client is a leading international engineering and construction organisation specialising in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects. They are recognized for their expertise in design, construction, and project management across various sectors, including transportation, energy, and urban infrastructure.
In Australia, they are part of a major infrastructure initiative, where they collaborate with stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions for complex projects.
The Role
Due to a recent large Hydro been won by the company (in JV with a Tier-1 builder), they are now looking to appoint their new Design Manager.
Reporting to the Technical Director, the Design Manager is responsible for overseeing all design-related activities for multi-disciplinary projects. This includes managing design teams, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards, and delivering high-quality design solutions aligned with project timelines.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of designers and drafters across architectural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural disciplines.
- Coordinate the design process, ensuring compliance with current legislation, standards, and codes of practice.
- Develop and implement effective design strategies that balance value engineering with cost efficiency.
- Maintain and monitor the teams work program to meet project deadlines and resource requirements.
- Foster positive relationships with clients, consultants, and design teams to optimize collaboration.
- Conduct design meetings to provide input and minimize inefficiencies.
- Develop comprehensive scopes of work and deliverables for all relevant disciplines.
- Evaluate team performance, provide constructive feedback, and motivate designers to deliver innovative solutions.
- Collaborate on new design challenges and encourage creative problem-solving within the team.
About You
You are a seasoned design professional with extensive experience in managing large-scale projects. You excel at leading multidisciplinary teams, navigating complex challenges, and delivering exceptional results under tight deadlines.
A tertiary qualification in engineering, design, or architecture.
Over 10 years of experience in a design management role for Tier-1/Tier-2 contractors.
Strong expertise in conceptual design, resource documentation, and value engineering.
Proven leadership skills, including team supervision, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Ability to adapt to changing environments and deliver under pressure.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and document management systems like SharePoint.
Preferred Skills
- Proficiency in design and project management software such as AutoCAD, MS Project, and calculation tools like Sofistik,Plaxis, ST1, CGB.
- Proven experience working in a JV environment with multiple stakeholders (internal and external)
