JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Estimator Intern
DEPARTMENT: Production

ROLE PURPOSE

The Estimator Intern will support the estimation team in planning and preparing job estimates to ensure cost-effectiveness while maintaining quality standards. This role provides hands-on experience in analyzing job specifications, material costs, and production requirements within the printing industry.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in estimating labor and material costs for printing and binding jobs, including books, calendars, promotional materials, and packaging.
  • Support the review of job specifications, sketches, and layouts to determine cost-effective production methods.
  • Work with the estimation team to calculate unit and production costs using labor and material pricing schedules.
  • Assist in gathering data on paper stock requirements, binding processes, colors, and finishing quality for accurate cost estimation.
  • Collaborate with department heads and production teams to confirm cost elements and ensure efficiency in job planning.
  • Learn how to prepare competitive price estimates while considering production constraints and market pricing.
  • Assist in tracking estimates and job cost analysis to improve pricing accuracy.
  • Participate in discussions with internal teams (sales and production) to align on cost structures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Diploma/Degree in Printing Technology, Industrial Mathematics; Accounting; Actuarial Science; Graphic Arts, Business, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of printing processes, cost estimation, or production planning is an added advantage.
  • Completion of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES FOR THE ROLE

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) /Material Resource Planning (MRP) systems.
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to work with numbers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a customer service mindset.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
