Occupational Health Nurse (Manufacturing Sector)

Department: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Reports To: EHS Manager / Plant Manager

Location: Houston, TX

Position Type: Full-Time (On-Site) | Must be willing to support multiple shifts or be on-call for plant emergencies.

Job Summary

We are seeking an Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) to manage our on-site medical clinic and lead health and safety initiatives for our manufacturing facility. You will be the primary point of contact for employee health, balancing immediate clinical care for workplace injuries with proactive safety programs. Your focus will be minimizing manufacturing downtime, reducing repetitive strain injuries (RSIs), and ensuring strict adherence to workplace safety regulations.

Manufacturing-Specific Responsibilities

Acute Trauma & Emergency Response: Provide immediate clinical assessment and treatment for plant-floor injuries, including lacerations, burns, crush injuries, chemical exposure, eye foreign bodies, and musculoskeletal strains.

Active Floor Walkthroughs & Ergonomics: Frequently tour the production lines and assembly floors to observe working conditions, identify ergonomic stressors, and partner with EHS to design safer workstations.

Mandatory Regulatory Surveillance: Manage and execute regulatory health tracking programs, including:

Hearing Conservation: Annual audiometric testing due to plant noise levels.

Respiratory Protection: Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) and respirator fit-testing for workers exposed to airborne particulates or chemicals.

Vision Screenings: For forklift operators and precision assemblers.

Rigid Case Management & Return-to-Work: Manage the full lifecycle of workers' compensation claims. Collaborate closely with production supervisors to identify "light duty" or modified roles, keeping injured workers safely productive while reducing lost-time days.

Post-Incident & Drug Testing: Coordinate or administer post-accident drug and alcohol screenings in accordance with company policy and DOT regulations (if applicable).

Enhanced Qualifications & Requirements

Experience: 3+ years of nursing experience. Direct experience in an industrial, manufacturing, emergency room, or urgent care setting is highly preferred.

Certifications:

Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN or COHN-S) is strongly preferred.

CAOHC Audiometric Technician Certification (highly preferred for managing noise exposure).

NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Certification (highly preferred for managing respiratory tracking).

Physical Demands: Ability to navigate a busy manufacturing plant floor, including walking up to 2 miles a day, standing for long periods, and wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as steel-toed boots, safety glasses, and high-visibility vests.

Key Competencies for the Plant Floor

Industrial Savvy: An effective manufacturing OHN doesn't stay hidden in the clinic. They understand the flow of the assembly line, the physical demands of different job stations, and how an injury impacts both the person and production.

De-escalation & Triage: Ability to stay calm and lead emergency response situations during chaotic machinery or production incidents.

Supervisory Influence: Ability to firmly advocate for an employee's physical restrictions to production supervisors who may be focused purely on meeting output quotas.
