About the job Assistant Stores Manager
The Assistant Stores Manager is responsible for supporting the Stores Manager in the effective management of inventory, warehousing, materials control, and stores operations within the steel manufacturing plant. The role ensures the availability of raw materials, consumables, spare parts, tools, and production-related inventory while maintaining accurate stock records and supporting operational efficiency.
The incumbent will assist in supervising stores personnel, enforcing inventory control procedures, and ensuring compliance with company policies, health and safety standards, and operational requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Inventory Management
- Assist in the management and control of all inventory held within the stores and warehouse.
- Monitor stock levels to ensure uninterrupted production operations.
- Coordinate stock replenishment activities and maintain minimum and maximum stock levels.
- Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies.
- Participate in cycle counts and annual stock-taking activities.
- Ensure accurate inventory records are maintained at all times.
Materials and Spare Parts Control
- Monitor the availability of production consumables, engineering spares, tools, and maintenance materials.
- Coordinate the issuing and receiving of stock items.
- Ensure critical spare parts are adequately stocked to minimise plant downtime.
- Liaise with procurement regarding stock requirements and shortages.
- Assist in identifying obsolete, slow-moving, and surplus stock.
Warehouse Operations
- Supervise the receiving, storage, handling, and dispatch of materials.
- Ensure proper storage and preservation of stock items.
- Maintain housekeeping standards within the stores and warehouse areas.
- Ensure materials are correctly labelled and stored according to specifications.
- Support the implementation of warehouse optimisation initiatives.
Staff Supervision
- Assist in supervising stores personnel and warehouse assistants.
- Allocate daily tasks and monitor performance.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures and work instructions.
- Assist with training and development of stores staff.
- Promote teamwork and productivity within the department.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Promote safe material handling practices.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
- Support environmental and waste management initiatives.
Administration and Reporting
- Generate inventory and stock reports as required.
- Maintain accurate records of stock movements.
- Assist with monthly inventory reconciliations.
- Monitor and report on key inventory performance indicators.
- Support internal and external audit processes.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- National Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or Operations Management.
- Inventory Control or Warehouse Management certification.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience in stores, warehouse, or inventory management.
- Minimum 2 years' supervisory experience.
- Experience within a manufacturing, engineering, mining, or steel production environment will be advantageous.
- Experience with ERP systems and inventory management software.
