Job Overview
The Senior Design Specialist (BAS) is responsible for designing control projects that meet the scope of work and budget requirements as outlined in contract documents and sales estimates. This role ensures equipment compatibility, provides detailed sequences of operations, and generates high-quality engineering drawings.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design control projects to align with contract scope and budget.
- Provide detailed sequence of operations.
- Develop engineering drawings using Microsoft Visio.
- Determine BAS requirements in the absence of plans or specifications.
- Conduct site surveys to assess BAS needs for renovations and system replacements.
- Interpret project documents for new construction and renovation projects.
- Accurately forecast labor requirements for engineering projects.
- Recommend technical solutions and research external products.
- Assist contractors and internal teams in resolving building operational issues.
- Communicate effectively with internal employees, engineers, building owners, and contractors.
- Support service engineering for existing building systems.
- Complete Bills of Material for each project.
- Generate RFIs to clarify design issues.
- Provide design support to the sales team during the estimation phase.
- Maintain a library of engineering standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or two-year technical degree in HVAC or Electronics-related studies preferred.
- Equivalent technical experience (military, on-the-job training, etc.) may be considered.
- 5+ years of experience with:
- Microsoft Office Suite.
- Programming, configuring, and debugging computer systems.
- Reading and interpreting electrical and electronic diagrams.
- Using electronic equipment (volt meters, amp meters, oscilloscopes, etc.).
- Mechanical HVAC systems, including air handling and central plant equipment.
- AC power circuitry and low-voltage communication systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
- 3+ years experience programming in Alerton BAS, Distech, and/or Niagara.
- 8+ years experience in:
- Designing building automation systems.
- HVAC controls (programming, system start-up, commissioning, troubleshooting).
- Working with installation personnel, contractors, and sales teams.
- Providing mentoring and supervision on projects.
- Advanced knowledge of building systems operations and occupancy codes.
- Expertise in HVAC operations and building automation integration.
Essential Job Functions:
- Lift and carry materials such as drawings and computers.
- Maintain a valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Spend extended periods working at a desk.
- Travel to job sites as needed.
