Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Design Specialist to support our Building Automation Systems (BAS) projects. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, engineering, and supporting control system projects to meet contractual and operational requirements. This role includes developing control system drawings, sequences of operations, equipment specifications, and integration requirements for HVAC and other building systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design BAS controls projects based on contract documents and sales estimates while ensuring budget and equipment compatibility.

  • Provide detailed sequence of operations and engineering documentation using Microsoft Visio.

  • Determine BAS requirements in the absence of plans or specifications.

  • Conduct site surveys to assess existing systems (HVAC, Central Plant, Lab, Industrial, High-rise, K12, University, Healthcare) for renovation or system replacement.

  • Interpret project documentation to select optimal equipment and design approaches for both new and retrofit projects.

  • Accurately forecast engineering labor needs and track performance against budget.

  • Recommend technical solutions and assist the sales and operations teams throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure engineering work is completed accurately and on time.

  • Communicate effectively with external stakeholders including building owners, contractors, and consulting engineers.

  • Support service teams by troubleshooting and resolving building system issues beyond controls.

  • Prepare RFIs to clarify design issues and recommend practical solutions.

  • Assist sales team with design input during project estimation and bid phases.

  • Create and maintain engineering standards and contribute to process improvement initiatives.

  • Develop complete Bill of Materials for all assigned projects.

  • Suggest new products and technologies to improve project performance and value.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or two-year technical degree in HVAC, Electronics, or related field (or equivalent military/technical training).

  • 5+ years of experience with Microsoft Office Suite, BAS programming/configuration, and electrical/electronic diagrams.

  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools (volt meters, amp meters, oscilloscopes, etc.).

  • Solid understanding of HVAC systems and AC power circuitry (120VAC+), including low voltage communication (2-wire and Ethernet).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability to collaborate and resolve issues empathetically and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • 3+ years experience programming Alerton BAS, Distech, or Niagara systems.

  • 8+ years experience in BAS design, HVAC controls, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience mentoring team members and supervising projects.

  • Advanced knowledge of building codes, operations, and HVAC systems.

  • Expertise in DDC systems and system integration.
