About the job Sr. Mechanical Engineer
Job Title: Sr. Mechanical Engineer Switchgear
Location: Kearny, NJ (Approx. 30-40 mins from Metro New York)
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000
Position Overview: We are recruiting on behalf of a global leader in the design and manufacturing of critical electrical protection and connectivity solutions. Our client supports advanced infrastructure for telecommunications, renewable energy, and transportation.
They are seeking a decisive and experienced Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join their team. This is a hands-on design role focused on the physical engineering of custom electrical enclosures, switchgear, and panel boards. They are not looking for network designers; they need a manufacturing-focused engineer who understands metal fabrication, assembly, and the realities of the production floor. The ideal candidate is a technical authority who can navigate strict compliance standards (UL & NEC), mentor junior engineers, and bridge the gap between design and manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and design detailed 3D models for switchboard and switchgear assembly, ensuring designs are optimized for manufacturing and assembly.
- Act as a senior technical lead, mentoring mechanical engineers, checking drawings, and making critical project decisions regarding design specifications.
- Ensure all designs strictly adhere to UL 891 standards and the National Electrical Code (NEC) for safety and compliance.
- Manage the mechanical integration of electrical systems, including circuit breakers, component wiring, and busbar routing.
- Collaborate directly with the production floor to resolve fabrication issues, working hands-on with physical units to ensure design accuracy.
- Provide design direction for customer review drawings to meet specific consumer needs and safety requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is required.
- 5-7+ years of design experience specifically for custom electrical enclosures, switchgear, or panel boards.
- Must possess deep knowledge of UL 891 (Switchboards) and working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD software is required; Autodesk Inventor is preferred, but the client is open to experts in SolidWorks or equivalent who can demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly.
- Experience with UL 1558 (Switchgear), UL 67 (Panelboards), and UL 50 (Enclosures) is highly preferred.
- Candidates must come from a manufacturing factory environment or an engineering firm that designs specifically for manufacturing facilities.
- Strong verbal presentation, writing, and computer application skills are required to communicate effectively with production staff and management.
What They Offer
- Competitive benefits package and 401(k) with generous employer contribution.
- Paid Time Off (PTO) from day one and 10 annual company-paid holidays.
- Tuition Reimbursement program.
- A collaborative culture focused on Innovation, Excellence, and Integrity.
