Job Overview

As a Signalling Lead Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the design, development, and implementation of advanced railway signalling systems. You will lead a team of engineers, collaborating closely with other departments and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of safe, efficient, and reliable signalling solutions.

Hybrid - Must be willing to travel internationally, including flights, hotel and expenses paid.

Day rate - Outside IR35 depending on experience.

Contract - 2 years


Key Responsibilities

1- Leadership:

Lead and manage a team of signalling design engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise. Coordinate the team's efforts to ensure timely and high-quality project execution.

2- Design and Development

Develop and oversee the design of signalling systems, including layout plans, control algorithms, interlocking principles, and communication interfaces. Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.

3- Technical Oversight

Provide technical direction and support to the design team, offering solutions to complex technical challenges, reviewing design documentation, and ensuring adherence to specifications.

4- Project Management

Collaborate with project managers to define project scopes, timelines, and resource requirements. Monitor project progress, identify potential risks, and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful project delivery.

5- Stakeholder Engagement:

Work closely with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders to understand project requirements, address concerns, and provide technical expertise during project discussions and meetings.

6- Testing and Verification

Coordinate the testing and verification of signalling systems to ensure their functionality, safety, and reliability. Analyze test results, identify issues, and implement corrective actions.

7- Continuous Improvement

Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in signalling technology, industry standards, and regulations. Identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation within the signalling design and implementation processes.

8- Documentation

Create comprehensive design documentation, technical reports, and engineering specifications. Maintain accurate records of design decisions, changes, and project milestones.

9- Quality Assurance

Implement quality assurance processes to ensure that all signalling designs meet the required safety, performance, and regulatory standards.

10- Training and Development

Foster the professional development of the signalling design team by organizing training sessions, knowledge sharing, and skill enhancement activities.

Qualifications and Requirements:

1- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.

2- Professional engineering licensure or certification in relevant disciplines.

3- Extensive experience (15+ years) in railway signalling design, with a proven track record of successful project delivery.

4- Strong knowledge of signalling principles, interlocking systems, communication protocols, and safety standards (e.g., CENELEC, SIL).

5- Proficiency in relevant signalling design software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, signalling simulation tools).

6- Excellent leadership and team management skills.

7- Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.

8- Problem-solving mindset and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.

9- Project management experience is a plus.
