We are working with a well-established and highly regarded engineering, design, and construction organization seeking a Commercial Contracts Attorney to join its collaborative in-house legal team in Springfield, Massachusetts.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney seeking to transition into or further develop an in-house legal career while working closely with business leaders across a sophisticated national organization. The position offers meaningful responsibility, direct client interaction with internal stakeholders, and exposure to a broad range of commercial contracting matters within a dynamic project-driven environment.

About the Role

The Commercial Contracts Attorney will play a key role in supporting the organization's contracting function by reviewing, negotiating, and managing agreements critical to ongoing operations and project execution.

The successful candidate will work closely with professionals across project management, engineering, architecture, construction management, procurement, information technology, finance, and human resources to help facilitate business objectives while identifying and mitigating legal risk.

Responsibilities

Contract Drafting & Negotiation

  • Review, draft, revise, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including:
    • Subcontractor agreements
    • Consultant agreements
    • Vendor contracts
    • Non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements
  • Identify legal, financial, and operational risks within contractual arrangements.
  • Escalate complex or high-risk matters as appropriate.

Contract Management & Compliance

  • Support all stages of the contract lifecycle, including review, negotiation, approval, execution, and documentation.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of contract templates, playbooks, and best practices.
  • Help ensure compliance with internal contracting policies and procedures.
  • Maintain contract repositories and related documentation.

Business Partnership

  • Partner with internal stakeholders to explain contractual obligations and assist with risk-informed business decision-making.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, architects, construction managers, procurement professionals, IT, finance, and human resources personnel on contracting matters.

Legal Research & Special Projects

  • Conduct legal research related to contracts, construction law, and regulatory compliance issues.
  • Support audits, due diligence efforts, and internal legal reviews.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and legal department projects.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and educational resources regarding contracting practices and risk management.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Strong contract review, drafting, negotiation, and issue-spotting abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative, practical, and business-oriented approach to problem solving.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and emerging legal technology.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting commercial contracts in a law firm or in-house setting.
  • Exposure to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (A/E/C) industry.
  • Familiarity with construction-related agreements and procurement processes.
  • Understanding of insurance concepts, including general liability, professional liability, and workers' compensation coverage.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary expected to be in the $120,000 – $140,000 range, depending upon experience and qualifications.
