Job Description:

We are currently looking for an RN First Assistant Surgery to work alongside the surgeon in the operating room. Aside from assisting with surgical operations, a registered nurse first assistant or RNFA will provide direct patient care.

We are currently looking for an RN First Assistant Surgery to work alongside the surgeon in the operating room. Aside from assisting with surgical operations, a registered nurse first assistant or RNFA will provide direct patient care.

Our ideal candidate for the RN First Assistant Surgery position is highly skilled and experienced with keen and accurate attention to detail. In this role, you will be responsible for sterilizing equipment and prepping the operating room before surgery. It is also your duty as an RNFA to provide patient care, prep patients for the procedure, monitor their vital signs during surgery, and give them both pre- and post-op instructions. Moreover, it is part of your job as a registered nurse first assistant to verify each patient's medical history and update their electronic health records.

RN First Assistant Surgery works in a high-stress environment to be successful RNFA, you must think quickly and stay calm under pressure. Additionally, since you will be working closely with the surgeon and fellow perioperative nurses, you must have excellent communication skills and be able not only to follow the surgeons' instructions but also communicate clearly to other members of the surgical team. Aside from these, you must follow strict safety protocols to protect yourself and the patients.

Responsibilities:

  • Sterilize surgical equipment.
  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures.
  • Assist surgeons during the procedure.
  • Plays a hands-on role in surgical procedures by controlling bleeding, suturing incisions, and wounds as well as intervening if complications arise.
  • Monitor the patient's vital signs, including heart rate, respiration, and pulse.
  • Alert physicians if the patient begins to struggle to address the complications.
  • Care for patients before and after surgery.
  • Meet with patients and family members to answer their questions about the surgery, anesthesia, and recovery before the procedure.
  • Assess the physical condition of the patient to identify problems that would make surgery too risky.
  • Evaluate the condition of the patient following surgery to determine if the patient is ready for transport to the recovery room.
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of recent experience as an RN in a clinical setting.
  • Active RN license within the State of practice.
  • Current certifications (variable depending on the facility).
  • BLS (basic life support) certification.
  • Understanding of standard practices and procedures.
  • Proven experience as an operating room nurse.
  • Medical expertise in handling and cutting tissue, suturing, providing hemostasis, and using medical devices.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Can perform scrub and circulating nurse roles.
  • Excellent understanding of multiple surgical procedures.
  • Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
