Job Description:

Grossing Tech assists the anatomic pathologist in performing gross dissection of surgical specimens and biopsies. Performs daily activities associated with accessioning, grossing and routine processing of tissues received from surgical procedures. Performs tasks which involve exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures proper accessioning and labeling of tissue samples.
  • Processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
  • Prepares reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining.
  • Performs gross evaluation of biopsy and surgical specimens, followed by the appropriate dissections and description of findings.
  • Works closely with Pathologists and Departmental Supervisor to develop and maintain grossing procedures.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Keeps work area physically clean, organized and free of safety hazards.
  • Properly disposes of all bio-hazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials and prepares solutions and reagents in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Adheres to personnel policies including, but not limited to schedules and attendance, performance evaluations, up to date safety training and continuing education required for competency as well as certification maintenance.
  • Participates in regulatory agency inspection readiness and onsite inspections.
  • Communicates effectively and timely as needed to co-workers, management, medical directors, and other divisions.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Requirements:

· Associates degree in Chemistry, Biology or completion of an accredited program in Histotechnology AND one year of histology experience.

· OR Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology or Chemistry

· National Certification as a HT/HLT (ASCP) required

· Thorough knowledge of histology methods and correlation to disease processes

· Ability to follow protocols for the proper fixation and routine staining of samples

· Ability to consistently prepare and produce specimen sections with appropriate slide orientation, thickness, and stain quality for microscopic diagnosis by a pathologist

· Demonstrates good technique in the cutting, embedding, orientation and staining of specimens

· General knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements

· Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills. Sets a positive example.
