About the Role

A skilled Diesel Mechanic is needed to perform maintenance and repairs on Public Works Department vehicles and equipment. This role involves diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel engines, managing preventive maintenance, and assisting with vehicle operations during emergency situations. The position requires working under general supervision while making independent decisions regarding repairs and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform engine repairs, overhauls, brake and suspension work, clutch replacements, and electrical system repairs.
  • Maintain detailed repair records and manage a preventive maintenance program.
  • Repair power equipment such as compressors, jackhammers, and mowers.
  • Order and manage parts inventory and assist in vehicle specifications development.
  • Operate vehicles for snow removal, plowing, sanding, and emergency highway operations.
  • Follow safety protocols and update the DPW Computer Maintenance and Management System.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma with vocational or technical training in mechanics.
  • 5+ years of experience in gas and diesel engine repair.
  • Strong diagnostic and repair skills for motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to use mechanics tools and diagnostic equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDL B license with airbrake endorsement.
  • Hoisting license for operating heavy machinery.
