Position Summary

A large acute-care hospital in Peoria, Illinois, is seeking experienced Surgical Technologists to join its general surgery team. The Surgical Technologist will prepare operating rooms, maintain the sterile field, anticipate the needs of the surgical team, and provide skilled intraoperative support across a wide range of complex procedures.

This position requires strong general surgery experience and the ability to work independently with the Da Vinci robotic surgical system. New graduates will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms, instruments, equipment, and supplies for scheduled procedures.
  • Establish and maintain the sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
  • Perform surgical counts and follow established safety and infection-prevention protocols.
  • Anticipate the needs of surgeons and other members of the operating room team.
  • Pass instruments, sutures, and supplies accurately and efficiently.
  • Independently set up and support Da Vinci robotic procedures.
  • Assist with general surgery, gynecology, urology, ENT, vascular, and robotic cases.
  • Confirm that equipment and instruments are functioning properly before procedures.
  • Assist with room turnover and preparation between cases.
  • Document procedural information accurately in Epic OpTime.
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and support staff.
  • Participate in weekend, holiday, and call rotations.
  • Float to other surgical teams or sterile processing when qualified and operationally needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program with hands-on clinical experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • NBSTSA certification.
  • At least two years of hospital-based surgical technologist experience.
  • Strong experience in general surgery, gynecology, urology, and ENT procedures.
  • Independent Da Vinci robotic surgery experience.
  • Ability to scrub surgical procedures independently.
  • Ability to respond to call within 30 minutes.
  • Availability for weekend, holiday, and call rotations.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume surgical environment.

Candidates with at least 18 months of experience in a Level I trauma center may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting vascular procedures.
  • Experience in a large acute-care or academic medical center.
  • Level I trauma experience.
  • Experience using Epic OpTime.
  • Ability to support multiple surgical specialties.
  • Flexibility to assist other surgical teams or sterile processing when qualified.

Department Information

  • Fourteen operating suites dedicated to general surgery.
  • Twenty-nine total operating suites.
  • Approximately 20–40 general surgery cases performed each day.
  • Charge staff are available to assist with cases.
  • Surgical technologists are assigned throughout the operating room department.

Weekend and Call Requirements

  • Every third weekend, including the full weekend.
  • Weekend schedules include worked hours and an assigned call shift.
  • Holiday call rotation is required.
  • Call response time is 30 minutes.
