Pay Range: $52.42–$67.62 per hour
Job Overview
A leading healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Cytotechnologist to join its Cytology department.
The Cytotechnologist will screen gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, evaluate fine-needle aspiration samples, and assist with intraoperative and intraprocedural assessments. This role works closely with pathologists and clinical teams to provide timely, accurate, and high-quality diagnostic services.
The ideal candidate will hold an active New York State Cytotechnologist license and have at least three years of experience screening a broad range of cytology specimens.
Responsibilities
- Screen gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens accurately and within established turnaround times
- Evaluate fine-needle aspiration specimens
- Assist with intraoperative and intraprocedural cytology assessments
- Support procedures performed in the operating room, ambulatory surgery, breast imaging, endoscopy, radiology, and off-site clinical locations
- Review and sign out cases with pathologists according to the established schedule
- Assist with specimen preparation, staining, and coverslipping as needed
- Verify slide labels, patient names, specimen information, slide counts, clinical details, and gross descriptions against cytology requisitions
- Clean and maintain cytology aspiration equipment and procedure trays
- Ensure aspiration procedure supplies are properly stocked
- Process send-out specimens and related reports
- Maintain complete records in accordance with regulatory and accreditation requirements
- Maintain continuing medical education documentation
- Follow established safety, quality-control, and laboratory procedures
- Respond quickly and appropriately to changing departmental and procedural needs
- Participate in departmental activities as directed by Cytology and Laboratory leadership
- Perform additional related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related scientific field
- Graduation from an accredited or certified Cytology program and/or qualifying ASCP certification
- Minimum of three years of experience screening:
- Gynecologic specimens
- Non-gynecologic specimens
- Fine-needle aspiration specimens
- Current New York State Cytotechnologist license upon hire
- Current qualifying ASCP certification upon hire
- Strong knowledge of cytology specimen preparation and screening procedures
- Excellent attention to detail and diagnostic accuracy
- Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills
- Ability to remain composed in fast-paced or high-pressure situations
Preferred
- ThinPrep certification
- Familiarity with the Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology
- Hospital-based Cytology experience
- Experience providing rapid on-site evaluation during image-guided or procedural specimen collection
- Experience working directly with pathologists during case review and sign-out
