PositionSenior Web Designer / Delivery Lead

Type: Full-time/Remote

Field: Development of Information Platform

About the Role

The Senior Web Designer is the creative and delivery lead for a confidential geospatial project. The role combines senior-level screen design ownership with project management responsibility for the development period.

Design work covers: a TYPO3 13 LTS editorial website, a React 18 geospatial dashboard with interactive map (MapLibre GL JS), five chart types, paginated data tables, a report builder with PDF export, and an embeddable widget distributed as an npm package. The platform must meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA on the website and best-effort Level AA on the dashboard, with colour-blind-safe cartographic palettes throughout. All client communication is conducted in German.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own corporate design Develop the project-specific corporate design from scratch: logo direction, colour palette, typography, iconography, and form language — creating a visual identity that can be shared across two independent institutional project partners (Brandenburg & Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
  • Screen design all view types Design responsive layouts for all page types (desktop, tablet, mobile) — including the Homepage, 12+ CMS page templates, and all dashboard states (standard fullpage, two-column comparison, filter panel, map layer controls, chart views, table views, and report builder flow).
  • Lead dashboard UX Translate complex geospatial and forestry inventory data into clear, usable dashboard interfaces. Design the information hierarchy for map layers, filters, legends, layer ordering, chart frames, and data tables. Define UX for the comparison view and URL-shareable filter states.
  • Build Figma component library Deliver a complete Asset Library and component set in Figma covering all interactive UI elements: CTAs, buttons, labels, tags, filter selectors, map controls, tooltips, chart frames, table controls, and report builder components.
  • Ensure WCAG 2.2 AA compliance Validate all colour choices for WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratios. Design colour-blind-safe palettes for map layers and chart series (protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia). Annotate all Figma components with accessibility requirements (ARIA roles, focus states, keyboard interaction patterns).
  • Manage client delivery Serve as primary client contact for all design-related reviews. Lead formal design feedback cycles, present screen designs to client stakeholders in German, and ensure all accepted designs meet contractual accessibility and UX quality gates before handover to frontend development.
  • Support through Alpha & Beta Provide ongoing design support through both test phases — clarifying design intent, reviewing frontend implementations against Figma specs, and iterating based on user test feedback collected in the Beta round.
  • Optional deliverables Optionally lead Naming process, define a photographic image language, produce a clickdummy for stakeholder validation, and design a Dark Mode variant for the map view and/or the full platform.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a Senior Web Designer, UX/UI Designer, or equivalent creative lead role on web platform or digital product projects.
  • Demonstrated project responsibility: at least 2 reference projects meeting the financial thresholds — one project with a minimum turnover of EUR 250,000 and a minimum duration of 2 years; one project with a minimum turnover of EUR 150,000 completed within one year.
  • Proficiency in Figma — including component libraries, variants, auto-layout, and design-to-developer handoff workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience designing responsive web interfaces across website and web application contexts.
  • Proven WCAG 2.2 accessibility compliance at the design stage — practical knowledge of colour contrast validation, keyboard navigation patterns, and accessible component design for at least 1 reference project.
  • Portfolio demonstrating at least one dashboard, data visualisation, or mapping/GIS interface design.
  • Fluent German at minimum C1 level — all client communication and design presentations are conducted in German.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing geospatial or map-based interfaces (layer controls, map legends, filter panels, H3 hexagonal overlays).
  • Background in creating complete design systems or corporate identity from scratch for multi-partner projects.
  • Familiarity with BITV 2.0 or German public-sector accessibility expectations and EN 301 549.
  • Experience designing colour-blind-safe palettes for data visualisation (tools such as Viz Palette, Colour Oracle, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of PDF/UA requirements for exported report design.
  • Prior involvement in a German public-sector, open-source, or institutional digital platform project.
  • Exposure to agile delivery workflows with structured developer handoff using Figma dev mode or design tokens.
  • Optional: familiarity with dark-mode design for web applications.
