Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior System Engineer with a strong focus on DB2 database administration and IT infrastructure operations.
The role is responsible for the maintenance, operation, optimization, security, and continuous improvement of DB2-based IT solutions. The position includes DB2 LUW high-availability environments, incident and problem management, release and security management, database backup and recovery, access management, monitoring, and implementation of IT services.
The successful candidate will work across UNIX/AIX, Linux/Red Hat, and Windows environments and collaborate with technical teams on operational projects and service improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Operations
- Administer, maintain, and optimize IBM DB2 databases, particularly DB2 LUW environments.
- Plan, build, configure, and operate database environments according to operational and security requirements.
- Operate and maintain high-availability DB2 environments.
- Perform database configuration, optimization, and lifecycle management.
- Implement and maintain database backup and restore procedures.
- Manage database users, permissions, and access controls.
- Ensure database availability, stability, performance, and operational security.
High Availability & Replication
- Operate and support DB2 high-availability solutions, including:
- DB2 HADR
- TSA/MP
- Pacemaker
- Replication / Q Replication (Q-Rep)
- Troubleshoot database availability and replication issues.
- Support the continuous improvement and optimization of high-availability architectures.
Incident, Problem & Change Management
- Provide second- and third-level support for database-related incidents and problems.
- Perform structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Participate in Incident, Problem, and Change Management processes.
- Support release and security management activities.
- Identify recurring issues and contribute to sustainable technical solutions.
IT Service Implementation & Analysis
- Support the implementation of IT services.
- Prepare requirements, technology, and cost analyses for technical solutions.
- Evaluate technical and economic aspects of proposed solutions.
- Contribute to service-specific projects and, where appropriate, take technical or sub-project leadership responsibility.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Establish, maintain, and improve database monitoring and reporting structures.
- Use monitoring solutions such as Checkmk to ensure operational transparency and early detection of issues.
- Analyze monitoring data and support continuous service improvement.
Knowledge Management & Training
- Build and maintain technical knowledge within the database administration domain.
- Support knowledge transfer within technical teams.
- Contribute to the development of training concepts and training structures.
- Prepare technical training materials where required.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Informatics, or a comparable discipline.
- Alternatively, recognized IT vocational training combined with relevant professional experience.
- DB2 certification or equivalent practical DB2 expertise is required.
- Strong understanding of database administration and IT infrastructure operations.
- Good knowledge of IT service management processes.
Required Professional Experience
- At least 5 years of professional experience in DB2 database administration.
- Proven experience operating DB2 LUW high-availability environments.
- Strong practical knowledge of:
- DB2 11.5.x
- DB2 HADR
- TSA/MP and/or Pacemaker
- DB2 replication / Q Replication
- Experience working with UNIX/AIX and Linux/Red Hat environments.
- Experience with Windows environments is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Incident, Problem, and Change Management processes.
- Experience with database backup and recovery.
- Experience with database configuration and user/authorization management.
- Experience with database monitoring and operational reporting.
