Food Technologist: Product Development (Midrand) Permanent

Are you a hands-on food technologist with a passion for flavour? We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established manufacturer of food flavourings and seasonings, seeking a technically strong Product Development professional to join their team.

This is a formulation-focused role — not QA or QC. Only candidates with direct product development experience in flavour or seasoning environments will be considered.

Requirements

• Diploma or Degree in Food Technology, Food Science, or a related discipline
• 2–5 years' hands-on experience in flavour or seasoning product development (non-negotiable)
• Proven ability to build and troubleshoot flavour profiles independently
• Background in a flavour house, seasoning manufacturer, or similar production environment
• Strong sensory and olfactory skills
• Solid working knowledge of food and flavour regulatory requirements
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
• Good communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

What You'll Do

• Develop new flavour and seasoning systems from scratch, based on customer briefs and market trends
• Reformulate and improve existing products to enhance performance or meet new requirements
• Create and adapt application formulations for both sweet and savoury categories
• Prepare lab-scale samples and support scale-up to production
• Participate in sensory evaluations and lead internal tasting panels
• Source, assess, and approve new raw materials and ingredients
• Produce and maintain product specs, formulation records, and processing documentation
• Work closely with the sales team and clients to translate briefs into viable technical solutions
• Ensure all formulations meet relevant food safety and regulatory standards
