About the job Lead Development Geologist / G&G Team Lead
Role purpose:
The Lead Development Geologist is responsible for delivering high-quality geological interpretation, static modelling, and integrated geoscience support for Mubadala Energy Malaysia assets.
The role provides technical leadership for development and appraisal activities, working closely with reservoir engineers, petrophysicists, geophysicists, drilling, and other subsurface disciplines to improve field understanding and support value-accretive decisions.
In addition to individual technical contribution, the role includes leadership of the Subsurface G&G team, including work planning, prioritisation, quality assurance, coaching of team members, and fostering effective collaboration across the wider Subsurface organisation.
Key accountabilities:
Geological interpretation, modelling and reservoir description
- Build, maintain, and update static geological models for development and appraisal projects, including appropriate uncertainty and sensitivity cases.
- Integrate subsurface data from wells, seismic, petrophysics, production performance, and reservoir studies to improve reservoir understanding.
- Generate field and reservoir maps, correlations, and other geological deliverables required to support field management, subsurface reviews, and development planning.
- Provide geological input to reserve assessments, volumetric evaluations, field development planning, infill opportunities, bypassed pay identification, and recovery optimisation.
G&G team leadership
- Lead the G&G team in planning, prioritising, and coordinating technical work to support business objectives and delivery timelines.
- Provide technical guidance, quality assurance, and coaching to geoscience team members, helping to develop capability and maintain high technical standards.
- Promote effective collaboration across geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, drilling, and other functions to ensure integrated subsurface outcomes.
- Support resource planning, task allocation, and continuous improvement in G&G workflows, tools, and work practices.
Stakeholder engagement and external interface
- Present geological studies, modelling outcomes and recommendations to internal management, partners, and relevant external stakeholders.
- Support preparation of block commitment reports, well proposals, Field Development Plans, technical presentations, and other submissions required by regulators or partners.
- Contribute geological input to multidisciplinary studies and documentation, including support to HSSE and environmental reporting where relevant.
Budgeting, mentoring and capability development
- Provide budget input for geological studies, coring, special core analysis, petrography, and other outsourced technical work.
- Mentor junior geoscientists and share knowledge across the wider team to strengthen technical capability and succession depth.
- Encourage a collaborative team culture, ongoing learning, and constructive technical challenge.
Qualifications and Education:
Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geophysics, or a related geoscience discipline; an advanced degree is preferred
- Strong understanding of geological and geophysical principles, including seismic interpretation
- Broad knowledge of integrated/interdisciplinary geoscience workflows
Experience
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in hydrocarbon development, primarily within an oil and gas operating company
- Proven experience in development geology, reservoir modelling and mapping and seismic interpretation.
- Demonstrated track record of supporting drilling activities, including participation in multiple well delivery cycles
- Experience in coordinating multidisciplinary G&G activities and contributing to integrated subsurface studies
Skills
- Strong analytical, visualisation, and data interpretation skills, with the ability to identify patterns and integrate subsurface datasets
- Proficient in relevant geoscience software and tools; project management skills are an advantage
- Effective team player with high levels of adaptability and flexibility
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts both verbally and in writing
- Ability to guide, mentor, and provide technical direction to geoscience team members, fostering collaboration and ensuring high-quality deliverables
