Montclair is a wonderful town that loves its library. In the last year, visits and program participation have doubled and circulation has increased 50 percent.

We are looking for a Youth Services Reading Specialist to assist youth ages 0-17 to develop and improve their literacy skills by providing programming, outreach, collection development, readers advisory and reference services to youth who struggle with reading and writing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Apply educational best practices based on the Science of Reading used by Montclair Public Schools and the most current New Jersey State Curriculum standards
    • Coordinate in collaboration with the Head of Youth Services, with Montclair schools and daycare centers to develop and present recurring outreach visits
    • Design and present interactive literacy programs for youth, such as story times and book clubs, and present informational literacy sessions for parents and guardians
    • Provide guidance to youth and teen services librarians in developing inclusive collections and resources.
    • Develop diverse readers advisory tools such as booklists with an emphasis on early education.
    • Provide reference services to youth and their parents/guardians
    • Represent the library through email and in person meetings with community partners to promote literacy.
    • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

      • Possession of good customer service skills, such as exhibiting warm, welcoming behaviors and practices 
      • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and oral form
      • Time management skills to set priorities in order to meet assignment deadline
      • A high level of emotional intelligence
      • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele

    QUALIFICATIONS

      • A Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education with a concentration in reading.
      • A Reading Specialist Certificate (ELA)
      • Recent experience teaching reading, especially the Science of Reading
      • Familiarity with the current New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts
      • Bilingualism in English and Spanish is preferred

    WEEKLY SCHEDULE

    • Anticipated regular schedule is Monday-Friday 9-5. Flexibility for mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Drivers license and reliable means of transportation
    • Ability to drive the library e-tuk preferred

    SALARY

    • $57,945
