BORROWER SERVICES LIBRARY ASSISTANT
Montclair is a wonderful town that loves its library. Last year, visits and program participation doubled and circulation increased 50 percent.
We are looking for a part-time Borrower Services Library Assistant who is collaborative, outgoing, has documentation skills, and can handle difficult situations calmly.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Exhibit a warm, welcoming demeanor
Charge and discharge library materials, collect fees, register new patrons and issue library cards
Assist the public in the use of library resources and equipment
Maintain order by sorting and filing, putting books and other materials in their proper places and re-shelving returned material.
Answer the phone, handle inquiries and provide assistance
Prepare books and other library materials for the collection including unpacking and checking packing lists, labeling, marking, pocketing, mending and reinforcing
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Possession of good customer service skills such as exhibiting warm, welcoming behaviors and practices including being tactful
Effective communication skills to best determine the patron's actual needs and to convey accurate information to colleagues
Ability to de-escalate challenging situations
Ability to organize materials and handle details with accuracy and completeness
Ability to learn quickly from oral, written and/or demonstrated instructions
Computer skills and the ability to learn online platforms such as the Library catalog and the library consortium (BCCLS) Information Library System (Leap)
Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele
QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduate or equivalent
Some college or library courses, and/or library or other customer service experience desired
Proficiency in conversational Spanish is a plus
Residency in the State of New Jersey will be required in accordance with New Jersey Revised Statutes § 52:14-7
