Job Overview

The Senior Software Engineer – Java will lead the design, development, testing, and support of Java-based applications, APIs, and integrations. The role involves modernizing legacy systems, translating existing business logic into scalable Java solutions, and ensuring high-quality software delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain Java applications and backend services.
• Analyse existing systems and convert legacy functionality into modern Java solutions.
• Develop REST APIs and integrations.
• Clarify requirements and acceptance criteria with business analysts and subject matter experts.
• Contribute to solution designs, task breakdowns, and project estimations.
• Conduct code reviews and troubleshoot issues in test and production environments.
• Identify security, performance, and maintainability concerns.
• Maintain technical documentation and operational runbooks.
• Use AI coding assistants responsibly while reviewing and validating generated code.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and contribute to frontend development when required.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong Java development skills, including object-oriented programming, SOLID principles, design patterns, and clean coding practices.
• Proficiency in Spring, Maven or Gradle, JUnit, and mocking frameworks.
• Strong SQL skills, including query optimization, data modelling, and database performance analysis.
• Experience developing REST APIs using JSON/XML.
• Knowledge of automated testing, test-driven development, and root cause analysis.
• Familiarity with Git, IntelliJ or similar IDEs, and CI/CD concepts.
• Ability to analyse unfamiliar codebases and understand complex business logic.
• Experience with Docker, integration patterns, or legacy system modernization is an advantage.
• Frontend experience with React or Angular, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS is desirable.
• Exposure to Azure or AWS is an advantage.
• Financial services or Australian superannuation industry experience is desirable.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and ownership skills.
