Mid-Hudson Energy Transition, Inc. (MHET) is a not-for-profit community-based organization that empowers municipalities, their residents, and businesses to own and share renewable energy, create healthier buildings, and join in community wealth-building to strengthen the resilience of the Hudson Valley in the face of climate change. We engage and build on the active involvement of communities, with particular emphasis on low-income and communities of color that are being harmed first and worst by climate change.

Job Summary

MHET is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Part-Time Controller. This role will contribute to the financial management and sustainability of our organization. The Controller will play a crucial part in ensuring the accuracy and transparency of our financial records, supporting our mission-driven initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with our contract book-keeper to prepare and present accurate financial reports to aid in decision-making processes.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including payroll and general ledger maintenance and, as we ramp up our Loan Fund, tracking and overseeing accounting related to incoming donors and investments, and outgoing lending.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards relevant to nonprofit organizations.
  • Facilitate and support external audits, collaborating with auditors to provide necessary documentation.
  • Liaise with the Operations Manager and book-keeper to maintain precise records and ensure seamless coordination.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports for grant applications and reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to financial forecasting and planning processes to support organizational sustainability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in nonprofit accounting and financial management.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong commitment to social and environmental justice.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations impacting nonprofit organizations.
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks and Google Suite.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Working Hours:

Initially, we envision 4-8 hours per week on a flexible schedule, which may increase as the organization grows.

Location, Schedule and Availability:

Mid-Hudson Energy Transition is located in Kingston, NY. This position can be performed either in person or remotely, providing flexibility to the suitable candidate.

Compensation & Benefits:

Hourly pay commensurate with experience. Eligible for 401K with employer match after six months of employment.
