As the Commercial Sr. Estimator, you will play a pivotal role in our roofing company, overseeing the estimation processes. Your responsibilities will include accurately assessing project requirements, preparing comprehensive cost estimates, coordinating with clients and suppliers, and ensuring seamless project execution through effective communication, leadership and training of your estimating subordinates, and collaboration with the roofing team.

The Sr. Estimator reports to the Director of Sales.

Areas of Responsibility

Estimation and Proposal Preparation

  • Know and stay abreast of design requirements, codes, and materials; use expertise to prepare accurate and competitive proposals and contracts.
  • Review and understand the scope of work and project specifications.
  • Analyze blueprints, specifications, and proposals to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates.
  • Review data to determine material and labor requirements and prepare itemized lists.
  • Compute cost factors and prepare estimates for planning, organizing, and scheduling work.
  • Organize product information, shop drawings, and samples for submittals.
  • Assist with labor estimates for potential jobs.
  • Seek continuous improvement in estimating all company products and systems.

Relationship Management and Business Development

  • Develop and maintain relationships with manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Consult with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Secure required equipment/material processes as required.
  • Document customer feedback in job files.
  • Identify material cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement.
  • Identify and pursue potential business opportunities.
  • Be responsive to the needs of existing and potential customers.
  • Provide improvement recommendations to cost-estimating procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and organized files.
  • Maintain job communication for change-order management with field personnel.
  • Follow up on outstanding estimates as required or assigned by the general manager.
  • Assist the production department in scheduling and coordinating jobs.
  • Confer with building owners, managers, supervisory personnel, and subcontractors.
  • Review jobs after close-out to determine overall job performance.
  • Ensure the competency of the estimating team

Other Duties

  • Attend and participate in meetings as required.
  • Attend regular 1:1 meetings with the Director of Sales and provide updates as requested.
  • Participate in special projects as requested by management.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ability to convey information, concepts and concerns to people with differing communication styles.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret.
  • Speak in a clear and professional manner.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to provide leadership to team members.
  • Minimum of 5 years working knowledge of preferred estimating platforms.
  • Ability to use phones, tablets, and other technology tools; knowledge of and ability to use estimating software.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications; collect and research data and use intuition and experience to complement information.
  • Knowledge of various roof systems, materials, construction processes and theories; ability to design a roof system; desire to stay abreast of codes and other necessary information.
  • Coordinate projects, communicate changes and monitor progress.
  • Ability to teach others roof estimation skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet and exceed productivity standards; works quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to understand implications of change orders and loss/gain production on job budgets.
  • Understand budgeting and implications to jobs.
