An outstanding opportunity is available for an experienced Emergency Services RN leader to oversee a growing network of Freestanding Emergency Departments in the Charleston, South Carolina market.

This is not a traditional single-site ED Director position. This is a market-level leadership opportunity supporting multiple Freestanding Emergency Departments across a 445-bed hospital system comprised of two acute care hospitals and a rapidly expanding network of FSEDs.

The market currently operates four Freestanding Emergency Departments, with a fifth scheduled to open this year and another expected to begin construction early next year. The network is ultimately expected to grow to seven FSED locations.

The Director will support the executive leadership teams of two hospitals, report to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO), and have three managers within the leadership structure.

Position Overview

The Director of Freestanding Emergency Services provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership across the market's Freestanding Emergency Departments.

The Director is responsible for service excellence, clinical quality, patient experience, employee engagement, staff development, resource allocation, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and overall operational effectiveness.

In addition to Emergency Services, the Director provides oversight and coordination involving ancillary and support functions including Imaging, Point-of-Care Laboratory Services, Admitting, Security, Environmental Services, and other Support Services.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership across multiple Freestanding Emergency Departments.
• Ensure consistent delivery of safe, high-quality emergency care and an exceptional patient experience.
• Lead, coach, and develop three managers while supporting employee engagement, performance, retention, and future leadership development.
• Establish and maintain consistent Emergency Department clinical and operational standards throughout the market.
• Monitor quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and operational outcomes.
• Identify clinical and operational challenges, implement solutions, and ensure appropriate follow-through.
• Oversee resource allocation, staffing effectiveness, productivity, and operational performance.
• Partner with Imaging, Point-of-Care Lab, Admitting, Security, Environmental Services, and other support departments to ensure efficient operations.
• Build strong relationships with physicians, hospital executives, nursing leadership, and department leaders across both hospitals.
• Support strategic planning and operational standardization as the FSED network expands.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
• Minimum of 3 years of Emergency Services experience required
• Minimum of 3 years of nursing leadership experience required
• Current Registered Nurse license in the state of practice in accordance with applicable law and regulation
• BLS required
• ACLS required
• PALS or ENPC required
• Strong understanding of Emergency Department clinical and operational practices
• Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and engage nursing teams
• Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving abilities

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field
• Previous Emergency Department Director experience strongly preferred
• Freestanding Emergency Department leadership experience
• Multi-site Emergency Services leadership experience
• Experience supporting multiple facilities or executive leadership teams

Who We're Looking For

The strongest candidate will be an experienced Emergency Department Director who is ready to expand their leadership scope across multiple locations.

Freestanding Emergency Department experience is preferred but is not required for an otherwise exceptional candidate.

The organization may also consider a high-performing ED Manager with strong and progressive Emergency Department leadership experience, excellent job tenure, and experience within a large acute care hospital environment.

Candidates must bring substantial Emergency Department leadership experience and be prepared to lead clinical and operational performance across multiple locations.
