Our client is seeking a Commercial Accounting & VAT Manager to oversee a portfolio of SME, self-employed and owner-managed business clients while supporting the continued growth of an established professional services practice. This opportunity combines technical accounting knowledge, VAT expertise, team leadership and commercial responsibility in a role that offers significant autonomy and visibility.

The successful candidate will act as the main point of contact for clients, ensuring accounting and VAT obligations are delivered accurately and on time. You will oversee the review of accounting work, manage portfolio deadlines, support and mentor team members, and strengthen long-term client relationships. The role also includes identifying opportunities to expand service offerings, supporting new business discussions and contributing to the commercial development of the client portfolio.

Responsibilities

• Manage and grow a portfolio of accounting and VAT clients.
• Oversee VAT compliance, VAT return reviews and related obligations.
• Review bookkeeping, reconciliations and accounting records.
• Coordinate accounting deliverables and client deadlines.
• Act as a trusted advisor to business owners and finance contacts.
• Supervise, guide and develop junior and intermediate team members.
• Support proposals, client onboarding and service expansion initiatives.
• Identify commercial opportunities within existing client relationships.
• Work closely with internal teams to provide a seamless client experience.

Requirements

• Proven experience within accounting firms, CSPs, outsourced finance or professional services environments.
• Strong practical experience in accounting and Malta VAT compliance.
• Previous experience managing multiple client engagements simultaneously.
• Experience reviewing accounting work prepared by junior staff.
• Strong client relationship management and communication skills.
• Ability to prioritise competing deadlines and manage a busy portfolio.
• Commercial mindset with an understanding of client retention and service growth.
• ACCA, accounting degree or equivalent qualification considered advantageous.
