Senior Accountant

 Job Description:

Our client, a commercial construction and design company, is seeking a Controller to join their team. You will lead the financial operations and ensure strong financial governance in their construction projects.

You will oversee all financial operations, reporting, and compliance for the company. This role involves managing accounting functions, executing bookkeeping tasks, ensuring tax and regulatory compliance, optimizing cash flow, and providing strategic financial insights to the leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management to ensure financial stability
  • Oversee job costing, progress billing, WIP (work-in-progress) reporting, and lien holdbacks in construction projects
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (GAAP compliant)
  • Ensure accuracy in financial reporting, reconciliation, and variance analysis
  • Compile funding and financing applications tailored to the requirements of banks, funders, and investors
  • Execute day-to-day accounting, including AP/AR, payroll, and bank reconciliations
  • Ensure compliance with CRA construction tax regulations, payroll remittances, and GST/HST filings
  • Manage financial audits and liaise with external auditors, banks, and tax advisors
  • Maintain compliance with construction-related financial regulations (e.g., bonding, insurance,
  • subcontractor payments)
  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with business growth goals
  • Provide leadership on financial risk management, including cost controls and mitigation strategies
  • Serve as a financial advisor to the CEO, providing insights on profitability, financing options, and growth planning
  • Implement best practices in construction accounting to streamline financial operations
  • Optimize financial systems and reporting tools (QuickBooks, Procore, Telpay)
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and process automation in accounting workflows
  • Develop positive relationships with trades and vendors while upholding standards and requirements
  • Collaborate with project managers, and operations teams to ensure financial alignment
  • Support Indigenous procurement and supplier diversity initiatives in financial planning

Key Requirements:

  • Must be CPA Designated is preferred
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3+ years in general contractor construction finance
  • Gold Seal Certification (Construction Financial Management) or CCIFP (Certified Construction
  • Industry Financial Professional) is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles (job costing, progress billing, WIP, lien holdbacks)
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance (GAAP/IFRS)
  • Familiarity with CRA construction-specific tax rules and payroll requirements
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online
  • Familiarity with bonding, insurance, and project financing
  • Experience with Indigenous business operations or procurement policies
