JOB TITLE: INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL COORDINATOR – IPC
PURPOSE OF POSITION
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Coordinator to join our dynamic healthcare team. The IPC Coordinator will play a critical role in ensuring that the hospital/clinic maintains the highest standards of infection control and patient safety. The ideal candidate will be passionate about infection prevention, knowledgeable about best practices, and capable of leading initiatives that safeguard our patients and staff.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
1. Infection Control Fundamentals
- Understanding the key differences to effectively manage cases.
- Identify occurrence, reservoirs, incubation periods, periods of communicability, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, and susceptibility: Ensuring thorough knowledge of the disease process.
- Knowledge of the appropriate use of antimicrobials in various situations.
2. Diagnosis and Monitoring of Infectious Processes
- Assess lab findings for infection identification.
- Understand the strengths and constraints of various diagnostic tests.
- Prioritize critical pathogens for swift action.
- Identify indications for environmental microbiological monitoring: Know when environmental monitoring is needed.
3. Infection Control Protocols and Surveillance
- Lead the application of isolation measures as needed.
- Surveillance and epidemiologic investigations: Monitor for and investigate the occurrence of infectious diseases.
- Design surveillance systems: Develop systems for tracking and reporting infection cases.
- Collect and compile surveillance data: Gather relevant infection data for analysis.
- Make informed decisions based on the collected information.
- Take the lead in investigating and controlling infection outbreaks.
4. Policy and Procedure Development
- Develop and review infection prevention and control policies and procedures: Ensure the creation and regular updating of effective IPC protocols.
- Collaborate with the Department of Health in response to communicable diseases: Work with governmental agencies in the prevention and control of disease outbreaks.
5. Prevention and Transmission Control
- Implement strategies to reduce the spread of infections.
- Identify and implement infection prevention and control strategies related to quality improvement, facility, and equipment management: Enhance IPC practices through quality initiatives and proper facility management.
6. Management and Communication
- Provide leadership in the communication and execution of infection control practices within the healthcare team and to external partners.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
(Educational Qualifications & Experience)
- Nursing Qualification as Registered Nurse
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council
- BLS certification advantageous
- Advanced Computer Literacy
- Excellent IPC knowledge
- Post basic qualification in IPC will be an advantage
