The successful candidate will oversee structural bridge engineering operations while mentoring engineers, managing resources, and ensuring the successful execution of transportation infrastructure projects.

Position Overview

The Transportation Structural Section Head provides technical, operational, and strategic leadership for a structural bridge engineering team. This individual is responsible for overseeing project execution, managing departmental resources and budgets, supporting business development initiatives, and maintaining strong client relationships with public agencies and transportation stakeholders.

The role combines technical excellence, people leadership, financial oversight, and strategic planning to ensure the successful delivery of bridge and transportation infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of structural bridge engineers.
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching sessions, and career development planning.
  • Establish staffing plans and allocate engineering resources across projects.
  • Interview, recruit, and onboard engineering professionals.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance engineering culture.

Project Leadership

  • Oversee planning, design, and delivery of structural bridge projects.
  • Ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and engineering expertise to project managers and design staff.
  • Support project teams by resolving complex technical challenges.

Business Development

  • Partner with office leadership to execute strategic growth initiatives.
  • Expand market presence through networking, client engagement, and business development activities.
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with municipal, county, and state transportation agencies.
  • Lead and contribute to technical proposals, qualifications packages, and presentations.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets.
  • Monitor project financial performance and resource utilization.
  • Coordinate workload planning and staffing forecasts.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering practice.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of structural bridge engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading bridge engineering projects from planning through delivery.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Business development experience with public or private sector clients.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with county and state transportation agencies.
  • Previous supervisory or department management experience.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong client relationship management skills.
  • Proposal development and strategic planning experience.
