INDUSTRY: Automotive Manufacturing

SALARY PACKAGE: R20,000 to R30,000 per month, negotiable and dependent on qualifications, CATIA proficiency and relevant experience

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

An established company operating within the automotive sector is seeking a skilled CATIA Designer to join its technical team in Port Elizabeth.

A formal engineering qualification is not essential. The successful candidate must, however, demonstrate strong practical proficiency in CATIA and the ability to produce accurate 3D models, assemblies and technical drawings suitable for manufacturing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and modify accurate 3D models, assemblies and detailed technical drawings using CATIA.
  • Develop component, product, tooling, jig and fixture designs according to project requirements.
  • Convert design concepts, sketches and customer specifications into production-ready designs.
  • Prepare detailed 2D manufacturing drawings, including dimensions, tolerances and material specifications.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and customer requirements.
  • Modify existing designs to accommodate engineering changes, manufacturing requirements and customer feedback.
  • Perform design checks to ensure dimensional accuracy, manufacturability and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Identify potential design or manufacturing problems and recommend practical improvements.
  • Work closely with engineering, tooling, production, quality and project teams.
  • Support prototype development, tool trials, production launches and design-validation activities.
  • Update and maintain drawing registers, revision records and design documentation.
  • Ensure that all drawings and design files are correctly named, controlled and stored.
  • Participate in project meetings, design reviews and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Complete assigned design projects within agreed deadlines.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding customer designs, technical information and intellectual property.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven practical proficiency in CATIA is essential.
  • Experience creating and modifying 3D models, assemblies and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Sound ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Understanding of dimensions, tolerances and general manufacturing principles.
  • Previous experience in an automotive, manufacturing, tooling or engineering environment would be advantageous.
  • An engineering, draughting, design or technical qualification would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Applicants without a formal engineering qualification will be considered if they can demonstrate strong CATIA capability and relevant practical experience.
  • Experience with CATIA Part Design, Assembly Design and Drafting is required.
  • Experience with surface modelling, tooling, jigs, fixtures or automotive components would be advantageous.
  • Computer literacy and sound document-control ability.
  • Applicants may be required to complete a practical CATIA assessment.
