About the job Diesel Generator Service Manager
The Service Manager is responsible for ensuring that the Companys clients machinery is serviced/maintained as to ensure maximum efficiency and output. This includes total preventative service planning, managing breakdowns, people, sourcing, budgeting and reporting.
Key Performance Areas
Service
- Scheduling and overseeing service and repair work. This includes scheduling work orders, assigning technicians to jobs, and ensuring that work is completed on time and to the customer's satisfaction.
- Ensure availability of necessary tools and equipment.
- Assign projects to the right skills in the team, planning and managing effective works.
- Adhere to daily and weekly checks to ensure smooth operations on/off sites.
- Ensure all service-related works are done according to acceptable practice and standards.
- Maintaining records and reports. This includes keeping records of service work, parts inventory, and customer complaints.
- Ensure instructions to suppliers / contractors include a full scope of requirements to prevent add-ons and unplanned expenditure after quotation approval.
- Attend various meetings and action/communicate instructions.
- Produce written reports and make presentations.
- Providing customer service. This includes answering customer questions, resolving customer complaints, and providing recommendations for preventive maintenance.
- Developing and implementing maintenance programs. This includes developing schedules for preventive maintenance, as well as procedures for inspecting and testing diesel generators.
- Ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained.
Purchasing and Finance Management
- Ensure that all daily, weekly and monthly deadlines are adhered to.
- Always be aware of all policies and work within those boundaries.
- Overseeing the inventory of parts and supplies. This includes ordering parts and supplies, tracking inventory levels, and ensuring that the company has the necessary parts and supplies on hand to meet customer demand.
- Responsible for full-service budget function including preparation, forecasting, presentation, management, tracking and reporting.
Health and Safety
- Ensure that all systems, mechanical and electrical are safe to operate and compliant with regulations.
- Ensure the safety of all staff and visitors to the facility or areas where maintenance occurs.
- Developing company policies and standard operating procedures for all service/maintenance work.
- Ensuring direct reporting team members adhere to the safety policies and procedures.
- Check all tools and testing equipment regularly to ensure safe and good working order report any issues.
- Maintain Tool lists of Company and Employee items to ensure accurate record keeping.
- Be able and willing to accept SHE regulatory appointments.
Fleet / Tools and Fuel Management
- Checks to be performed on company vehicle and Inspection Sheet/reports are completed to determine relevant services, licence renewals for services.
- Check during and after services, to ensure they were carried out correctly.
- Ensure diesel consumption are correct and adheres to SHE requirements where ordered/delivered/kept on premises.
Communications and Reporting
- Ensure a professional approach when dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Written and verbal communication must comply with LPSAs code of conduct and should always be executed in a professional manner.
- Ensure timeous and professional response to service queries and complaints.
- Provide timeous feedback and status update on projects managed (E.g. progress reports and service logs)
- Complete job Cards, Work Orders and Attendance Reports and all related documents and ensure such documents are signed and submitted to the applicable department/s.
- Ensure site hours are correctly indicated to allow for hours on site tracking.
- Review and Monitor Reports provided by staff within your Department.
- Present yourself in a professional manner upholding the reputation of the Company.
Human Resources
- Recruiting and hiring new employees. This includes identifying qualified candidates, conducting interviews.
- Manage a team of technical and administrative personnel.
- Training and developing technicians to ensure correct skillsets are present within the team. This includes providing training on new equipment and technologies, as well as on customer service skills.
- Performs and verifies Performance Evaluations on direct reports at least once a year.
- Drives the Services and Reliability initiative focused on Preventive & Predictive services through managing direct reports and toolbox talks.
- Must be able to work to a flexible schedule.
- Manage, coach and develop a high performing Service team that meets agreed objectives, and which delivers best practice results, added value and continuous improvement.
- Set department objectives/KPIs and review and assess ongoing performance of direct reports.
- Report on achievement of targets and identify any actions required.

Experience and Qualifications
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Relevant Diploma, Degree or Trade Certificate is not essential but advantageous.
- 5 years' experience within the diesel generator industry OR car/truck workshop type environment as a Supervisory/Manager is essential.
- Strong knowledge of diesel generator machinery/equipment and parts.
- Ability to keep track of and report on activity.
- Be highly aware of safety, health and environment stipulations and very cautious to reduce downtime and errors.
- Understanding of parts procurement / supply chain processes.
- Abel to provide technical training in diesel technology.
- Read and understand technical manuals, as well as be able to troubleshoot and repair diesel generators.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Able to communicate effectively with customers and employees.
- Ability to handle stress to operate under strict deadlines.
- Some electrical knowledge would be an advantage.
- Drivers License and own vehicle.
Computer Literacy
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office will advantageous
