Position Overview
A well-established engineering company based in Coega, Gqeberha is seeking a skilled and committed Project Managerto oversee structural fabrication and installation projects within the mining and industrial sectors.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing projects from planning through to completion, ensuring that all work is delivered on time, within budget, and in line with required safety, quality, engineering and client standards.
This role is best suited to a hands-on Project Manager with strong structural fabrication knowledge, excellent planning ability, technical understanding, and the ability to manage teams, suppliers, subcontractors and client expectations effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning and Execution
- Develop detailed project plans, schedules and resource allocations for structural fabrication projects.
- Coordinate design, procurement, fabrication and installation activities.
- Manage project timelines, milestones and deliverables.
- Ensure projects are executed according to agreed specifications, deadlines and budgets.
- Manage subcontractors, suppliers and internal project teams.
- Identify project risks early and implement practical solutions.
Technical Oversight
- Review and interpret structural drawings, fabrication details and technical documentation.
- Ensure fabrication and installation work meets engineering, quality and regulatory standards.
- Conduct site inspections and monitor workmanship.
- Implement quality assurance checks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure technical queries are resolved efficiently and accurately.
Budgeting and Cost Control
- Prepare and manage project budgets, cost forecasts and cost tracking reports.
- Request supplier quotations and ensure components are ordered timeously.
- Monitor project expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Ensure cost control is maintained without compromising safety or quality.
- Prepare costing sheets and quotation lists where required.
Supplier and Subcontractor Management
- Source and liaise with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Obtain and compare quotations.
- Ensure suppliers and subcontractors meet project specifications and deadlines.
- Maintain proper records of supplier quotes, correspondence and approvals.
Stakeholder Management
- Act as the main point of contact between clients, consultants, suppliers and internal teams.
- Provide regular project updates and progress reports.
- Communicate risks, delays and corrective actions clearly.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with all project stakeholders.
Standard Parts, Pricing and Fabrication
- Assist with the design, description and quantification of standard components for structural projects.
- Develop and maintain costing sheets and quotation lists.
- Revalidate standard pricing where required.
- Plan and lead fabrication jobs for standard part orders.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Enforce strict adherence to health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure all site work is carried out safely and responsibly.
- Monitor training records to ensure employees and contractors are suitably certified.
- Promote a safety-first culture across all projects.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate project documentation, including contracts, drawings, change orders, RFIs, progress reports and supplier correspondence.
- Manage approved drawing registers for each project.
- Conduct regular project inspections and compile snag lists.
- Track snag list items through to completion.
- Lead post-project reviews and implement lessons learned for future improvement.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 2 years' experience in Project Management within structural fabrication, engineering or related sectors.
- At least 1 year experience using Autodesk Inventor Professional 3D within structural fabrication or engineering.
- Strong understanding of structural systems, fabrication methods and installation processes.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and technical documentation.
- Proficiency in project planning tools such as MS Project or similar.
- Strong supplier, subcontractor and team coordination experience.
- Excellent planning, reporting and documentation skills.
- Good understanding of safety and quality requirements in an engineering or fabrication environment.
Advantageous Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related technical field.
- PMP or other project management certification.
- Experience working on mining, industrial or heavy engineering projects.
- Experience managing fabrication and installation projects from start to finish.
