Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Underground Project Engineer to support the planning, execution, and delivery of underground capital infrastructure projects for an Underground Mining Project located in the interior of British Columbia. This site-based position operates on a fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) rotational schedule, with full camp accommodations provided while on site.

Work schedules will be aligned with project and operational requirements. The successful candidate must be flexible and adaptable to varying rotation lengths, including extended site rotations as required to support project milestones and construction activities.

The Underground Project Engineer will support Project Managers in the planning and execution of underground infrastructure projects through design coordination, contractor management, procurement support, construction oversight, project controls, and commissioning activities. The role will work closely with operations, technical services, contractors, and consultants to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.

Projects may include underground development, ventilation systems, pumping and dewatering infrastructure, electrical distribution, mine services, underground facilities, and other sustaining or growth capital projects. Responsibilities:

Onsite operational assistance specific tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the planning, execution, and commissioning of underground capital infrastructure projects, including development, ventilation, pumping systems, electrical infrastructure, backfill systems, water management systems, underground facilities, and other mine support infrastructure;
  • Develop project scopes, execution strategies, schedules, budgets, and resource plans to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget;
  • Coordinate and manage contractors, consultants, vendors, and site personnel involved in project execution;
  • Monitor project performance against schedule, budget, and key performance indicators, and prepare regular progress reports for management;
  • Prepare capital cost estimates, forecasts, business cases, and funding requests for proposed projects;
  • Support procurement activities, including preparation of technical specifications, bid evaluations, contractor selection, and purchase recommendations;
  • Review engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and construction packages to ensure constructability and alignment with project objectives;
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities involving mining, geotechnical, ventilation, mechanical, electrical, civil, and environmental teams;
  • Identify project risks and develop mitigation plans to minimize impacts to safety, cost, schedule, and operational performance;
  • Provide field engineering support during construction and commissioning activities;
  • Ensure projects are executed in compliance with applicable regulations, permits, company standards, and engineering best practices;
  • Participate in contractor management, project meetings, progress reviews, and management presentations;
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of project controls, including cost tracking, schedule updates, change management, and document control systems;
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues encountered during project execution;
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and project closeout documentation;
  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve project execution efficiency, safety, quality, and cost performance;
  • Foster a strong safety culture and ensure all work is completed in accordance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Compensation:

  • Competitive compensation is based on actual hours of work performed; and
  • Compensation will be based on the experience of the applicant.

Work Schedule:

  • Onsite work is generally performed to a maximum of 12 hours per day;
  • Rotation is 2-weeks on-2-weeks off rotation, but may change depending on Project requirements;
  • Travel time to/from a project site are paid from point of hire to a maximum of 8 hours per travel day;
  • Travel costs to/from a project site are reimbursed;
  • Time off will be accommodated with appropriate advanced notice to the Project Manager; and
  • Vacation starts at two weeks per year and is included in hourly compensation. Additional unpaid time off is available based on project workload.

Qualifications/Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline;
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia, or eligible for registration with EGBC;
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in underground mining, mine construction, infrastructure projects, or heavy industrial project execution;
  • Demonstrated experience managing capital projects through planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases;
  • Strong understanding of underground mine development methods, mine infrastructure systems, and construction practices;
  • Experience managing contractors and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams in a site-based environment;
  • Experience developing and maintaining project schedules using Microsoft Project, or similar scheduling software;
  • Experience preparing capital cost estimates, project budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting;
  • Knowledge of engineering design review processes, change management, and project risk management principles;
  • Familiarity with contract administration, procurement processes, and project execution strategies;
  • Working knowledge of mine ventilation, dewatering, pumping, electrical distribution, underground construction, or related infrastructure systems;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 and engineering software relevant to project execution;
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills;
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects and work collaboratively with operations, engineering, and contractor teams;
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work at a remote mine site on a rotational schedule.

Optional Preferred Qualifications

  • PMP certification or formal project management training;
  • Previous experience in mine construction, shaft/surface infrastructure, or major underground capital projects;
  • Experience with Owners Team, EPCM, or contractor-led project execution models;
  • Experience with project controls and cost management.
