Pipeline Superintendent
About the job Pipeline Superintendent
Job Summary
The Pipeline Superintendent holds full strategic and operational accountability for the design, construction, management, and continuous operation of all mine site fluid infrastructure. This includes high-pressure tailings slurry disposal lines, comprehensive pit or underground dewatering networks, process water distribution loops, and fresh water supply lines. This leadership role directs internal pipeline crews and specialized contractors, manages multi-million dollar asset budgets, and ensures absolute environmental containment and regulatory compliance across kilometers of linear site infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Oversight & Execution: Lead the long-term planning, installation sequence, and relocation strategies for all site pipeline corridors, ensuring they lock cleanly into the overarching multi-year mine plan.
- Contractor & Crew Leadership: Direct, mentor, and evaluate pipeline coordinators, supervisors, internal pipe-fusion crews, and heavy civil contractors executing major infrastructure expansions.
- Asset Integrity & Risk Management: Own the preventative maintenance, pipeline rotation (for abrasive slurry wear), wall-thickness monitoring, and asset life-cycle programs to prevent catastrophic line failures or environmental spills.
- Regulatory & Environmental Ownership: Enforce a strict zero-harm environment; serve as the primary technical authority ensuring containment berms, leak detection systems, and catch basins comply with environmental permits and provincial mining regulations.
- Budgetary Control: Formulate and manage the annual operational (OPEX) and capital (CAPEX) budgets for pipeline infrastructure, pump stations, and fluid management systems.
- Emergency Response Planning: Establish, test, and maintain robust emergency response protocols for pipeline ruptures, extreme weather water surges, and sudden dewatering failures.

Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Mining Engineering, or a related technical discipline combined with equivalent senior heavy civil infrastructure management experience.
- Experience: 8 to 10+ years of progressive experience managing complex fluid-transfer infrastructure, with at least 3 to 5 years in a dedicated supervisory or superintendent capacity on a large-scale mine site or heavy industrial asset.
- Certifications: Possession of regional mining supervisor certifications (e.g., surface/underground common core supervisor modules) and a clean driver's abstract.
Technical Skills & Attributes
- Fluid Dynamics & Pumping Expertise: Mastery of large-scale slurry transport, multi-stage centrifugal and positive displacement pump stations, high-diameter HDPE fusion, and line hydraulic limitations.
- Project Management & Cost Controls: Proven capability managing large civil engineering projects, evaluating vendor contracts, and tracking cost-performance indexes.
- Crisis Management & Decision-Making: Decisive leadership style under pressure, with the ability to safely manage high-risk pipeline isolations and rapid operational changes without shutting down mill operations.
