The Shaft Superintendent is responsible for the overall management and execution of shaft construction and sinking activities for mining projects. This position provides leadership and direction to shaft crews, supervisors, contractors, and project teams to ensure shaft works are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, budgets, engineering requirements, and quality standards.

Responsibilities:

Shaft Operations & Construction

  • Lead and oversee day-to-day shaft sinking and construction activities.
  • Coordinate shaft excavation, ground support, lining, concrete, steelwork, services, and associated underground works.
  • Develop and coordinate daily and short-term work plans, priorities, and production targets.
  • Ensure shaft activities are properly sequenced and coordinated with engineering, construction, and project requirements.
  • Monitor productivity and identify opportunities to improve shaft performance and execution.

Crew & Contractor Management

  • Provide leadership and direction to shaft supervisors, crews, subcontractors, and contractors.
  • Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and resources required to meet project objectives.
  • Monitor contractor performance, productivity, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Support workforce planning, training, competency development, and performance management.
  • Promote strong communication and teamwork across all shaft operations.

Safety & Environmental

  • Provide visible leadership in health and safety across all shaft activities.
  • Ensure work is conducted in accordance with applicable legislation, site requirements, and company safety standards.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and address hazards, deficiencies, and unsafe conditions.
  • Support incident investigations, corrective actions, safety meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure shaft operations comply with applicable environmental requirements.

Schedule, Cost & Production

  • Monitor shaft progress against project schedules, production targets, and key milestones.
  • Track productivity, labour, equipment utilization, materials, and operating costs.
  • Identify delays, constraints, and risks that may impact shaft sinking and construction activities.
  • Support cost forecasting, budget management, and contractor progress claims.
  • Prepare regular production and project status reports for project management.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Coordinate the availability, utilization, and maintenance of shaft sinking and construction equipment.
  • Work with maintenance teams to support equipment reliability and minimize operational downtime.
  • Coordinate hoisting systems, sinking equipment, pumps, ventilation, dewatering, and other shaft services as required.
  • Ensure equipment and materials required for planned activities are available and properly maintained.

Engineering & Technical Coordination

  • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure shaft construction activities align with approved designs, specifications, and methodologies.
  • Coordinate technical issues, RFIs, design changes, and field modifications.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, work plans, and technical requirements.
  • Coordinate shaft interfaces with underground development, surface infrastructure, electrical, mechanical, and other project disciplines.
  • Support constructability reviews and development of practical shaft construction methods.

Quality & Project Coordination

  • Ensure shaft construction is completed in accordance with project specifications, QA/QC requirements, and approved procedures.
  • Coordinate inspections, testing, surveying, documentation, and resolution of deficiencies.
  • Participate in project coordination meetings, contractor meetings, and construction planning sessions.
  • Communicate shaft progress, risks, issues, and schedule impacts to project management.
  • Support commissioning, completion, and handover of shaft infrastructure.

Qualifications/Experience/Education Requirements

  • Diploma or university degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of underground mining, shaft sinking, shaft construction, or major underground construction experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive supervisory or superintendent-level experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with shaft sinking, ground support, shaft lining, hoisting, dewatering, ventilation, and underground construction activities.
  • Experience working on mining, EPC, EPCM, or mining contractor projects is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of shaft construction methods, equipment, sequencing, and safety requirements.
  • Experience managing crews, contractors, budgets, schedules, and production targets.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
