Job Description:

JDS is seeking a motivated and highly organized Project Engineer to join our Environment and Reclamation division. The ideal candidate will have a background in engineering and project coordination within the mining and/or environmental remediation sectors. This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and contribute to projects that prioritize sustainability, collaboration, and community partnership.

The work schedule will include a mix of standard 40-hour office work weeks, with occasional travel for site visits, project-related workshops, and on-site coordination during field programs in various locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with environmental and engineering consultants to advance design and study work.
  • Attend coordination and review meetings with the project team.
  • Review constructability of designs.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise.
  • Support development of permit applications and stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Develop CAPEX and OPEX estimates for mine closure and reclamation projects.
  • Project Coordination / Controls:
    • Drive progress by planning, executing, and monitoring project activities across multiple tasks/phases.
    • Development of RFQs, RFPs, and bid evaluations.
    • Hiring and managing consultants/contractors, reviewing invoices, and negotiating contracts.
    • Requesting Purchase Orders from Accounts Payable.
    • Planning site programs and supporting their execution through coordination and procurement. Examples of site programs include drilling programs, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure upgrades/maintenance.
    • Management of technical and environmental desktop scopes.
    • Budget development, change management, and cost tracking and reporting.
    • Developing and utilizing change management tools such as change notices, change orders, RFIs, from both the owner and consultant / contractor side, ensuring a high level of detail and accuracy.
    • Contributing to and maintaining detailed project schedules.
    • Leading, coordinating, and documenting meetings.
    • General Administration (organization and filing of project documentation, including proposals, quotes, purchase orders, invoices, reports, etc.).
    • Promote a culture of health and safety.

Qualifications/Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in an applicable engineering discipline (environmental, civil, geotechnical, mining) with a minimum of 4 years of practical experience.
  • Ideally registered as a P. Eng. in British Columbia, or other Province or Territory.
  • Previous site experience in reclamation, preferably with a focus on closed mine sites is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with permitting for reclamation projects is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of project cost control fundamentals with analytical skills and experience in financial analysis, modeling, and budget methodologies.
  • Proficient in implementing change management tools and managing budgets.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and technical skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional writing and presentation abilities using Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or resource software such as Deswik, Vulcan, MineSight, Leapfrog or others.
  • Familiarity with Primavera P6 is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work in remote and challenging environments.
  • Based in Vancouver, within commutable distance, or willing to relocate, is preferred but not critical.
  • Valid Driver's license required (minimum of Class 5).
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset (English/French).
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Compensation:

  • Compensation will be based on the experience of the applicant.
  • Competitive compensation is based on actual hours of work performed (hourly as opposed to salary).
  • Travel time to/from a project site is paid from point of hire up to a maximum of 8 hours per travel day.
  • Travel costs to/from a project site are reimbursed.
  • Time off will be accommodated with appropriate advanced notice to the Project Manager.
  • Vacation starts at two weeks per years (and included in hourly compensation). Additional un-paid time off is available based on project workload.

Work Schedule:

  • Office work is capped at 10 hours per day, with 8 hours per day as standard.
  • On-site / shift work is capped at 12 hours per day.
  • Occasional site visits will be required in this role. During field programs, rotational work may be required.
