About the job Shaft Engineer
The Shaft Engineer provides technical and engineering support for shaft sinking and shaft construction projects, coordinating engineering activities across shaft infrastructure, construction, and site operations. This position works closely with the Shaft Superintendent, engineering teams, contractors, and project management to ensure shaft works are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with design requirements, schedules, specifications, and quality standards.

Responsibilities:
Shaft Engineering & Technical Support
- Provide engineering support for shaft sinking, shaft construction, and associated infrastructure.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, designs, construction methods, and technical requirements.
- Coordinate engineering activities related to shaft excavation, ground support, shaft lining, shaft steel, services, stations, and associated infrastructure.
- Identify technical issues and develop practical solutions to support field execution.
- Support constructability reviews and development of shaft construction methodologies.
Site & Construction Support
- Provide day-to-day engineering support to shaft construction and site teams.
- Work closely with the Shaft Superintendent and construction crews to resolve technical and field issues.
- Conduct site inspections, field measurements, and construction reviews as required.
- Coordinate RFIs, technical queries, design changes, and field modifications.
- Ensure construction activities are completed in accordance with approved engineering requirements.
Engineering Coordination
- Coordinate engineering deliverables between project engineering teams, contractors, consultants, and site personnel.
- Review and track engineering documentation, drawings, calculations, and technical submissions.
- Coordinate interfaces between shaft works and civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, ventilation, dewatering, and underground infrastructure.
- Support the review and implementation of design changes and engineering revisions.
Planning, Schedule & Cost
- Support shaft construction planning, sequencing, and scheduling.
- Monitor engineering activities and deliverables against project milestones.
- Provide technical input into construction schedules, work plans, and production planning.
- Support quantity tracking, cost estimates, change management, and progress reporting.
- Identify engineering risks, constraints, and potential impacts to project schedule and cost.
Quality & Safety
- Ensure engineering and construction activities comply with project specifications, applicable regulations, and quality requirements.
- Support QA/QC activities, inspections, testing, and resolution of deficiencies and non-conformances.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure engineering decisions consider safe construction and operating practices.
- Support investigations and corrective actions related to technical or construction issues.
Documentation & Project Coordination
- Maintain accurate engineering records, technical documentation, RFIs, design changes, and field reports.
- Participate in project, engineering, contractor, and construction coordination meetings.
- Communicate technical issues, risks, and recommendations to project management and site leadership.
- Support project completion, as-built documentation, commissioning, and handover activities.

Qualifications/Experience/Education Requirements
- University degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of engineering experience in mining, underground construction, or shaft sinking.
- Demonstrated experience with shaft sinking or shaft construction is required.
- Strong understanding of shaft excavation, ground support, shaft lining, shaft steel, hoisting, dewatering, ventilation, and underground construction.
- Experience working with engineering consultants, contractors, construction teams, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and construction documents.
- Experience with project scheduling, cost tracking, change management, and construction planning is an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is an asset.
