About the job Chief of Thoracic Surgery Unit

The Chief of Thoracic Surgery Unit (Principal Consultant) is responsible and accountable for the delivery of safe, effective, direct and indirect, patient- centered care through the continuum of perioperative care to include OPD clinics, inpatient ward and operating rooms. The Chief of the Unit is responsible for promoting high standards of practice through development of surgical policies, protocols and practice guidelines; participating in rigorous performance improvement monitoring; resident/student and staff education and surgical research. He/she has authority to act on all surgical performance improvement and administrative issues and critically review surgical deaths and complications that occur within the Unit.

Education and Experience profile

  • A MB.Ch.B. or its equivalent from a recognized University
  • A M.Med./PhD in Thoracic Surgery or its equivalent
  • Must be registered (or meet the requirements for registration, if currently working abroad) to the Ugandan Medical and Dental Practitioners Council
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of work experience in Thoracic Surgery Unit in a general, regional referral or national referral hospital
  • Has previous documented activities as team leaders in health sectors
  • Has previous documented management experience in healthcare facilities
  • Has surgical experience in advanced surgical procedures 
  • Has scientific research titles in surgical sectors
