About the job Consultant of Ophthalmology

The Consultant Ophthalmologist will enhance Uganda's national eye health services by supporting the development of surgical, clinical, and management skills among eye health workers. The role involves providing expert patient care in both the ward and outpatient clinics, performing advanced surgical procedures, and regularly updating the Head of Unit on critical cases. The Consultant will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, radiologists, and anesthetists, to determine the best treatment plans. With strong clinical and teaching abilities, the Consultant will also lead efforts to minimize infection risks in collaboration with the Infection Prevention and Control Service and the Quality & Safety Department. Key responsibilities include building the technical capacity of local staff, leading the eye care team, and providing clinical training to surgeons and other eye health professionals.


Education and Experience profile:

  • A MB.Ch.B. or its equivalent from a recognized University
  • A M.Med./Fellowship in Ophthalmology
  • Must be registered (or meet the requirements for registration, if currently working abroad) to the Ugandan Medical and Dental Practitioners Council
  • Minimum of six (6) years of work experience in Ophthalmology or related field
