About the job Specialist Medical Officer in Radiation Oncology (Radiotherapy)
The Specialist Medical Officer – Radiation Oncology is responsible for providing specialized clinical care to patients undergoing radiation therapy for cancer and selected non-malignant conditions under the supervision and guidance of the Consultant Radiation Oncologist. The role involves the assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up of patients receiving radiotherapy, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
The Specialist Medical Officer participates in the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans, reviews clinical and imaging findings, monitors treatment progress, manages treatment-related toxicities, and contributes to the overall coordination of patient care throughout the oncology pathway.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Specialist Medical Officer collaborates closely with Consultant Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Surgeons, Medical Physicists, Radiologists, Pathologists, Oncology Nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal clinical outcomes and continuity of care.
The Specialist Medical Officer is actively involved in patient and family counselling, providing clear information regarding diagnosis, treatment options, expected outcomes, and potential side effects of therapy. The role also includes participation in tumor boards, departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, teaching activities, and the implementation of evidence-based oncology practices.
The post holder is expected to maintain high standards of professional practice, support the development of radiation oncology services, and contribute to the achievement of departmental, hospital, and national healthcare objectives.
Education and Experience profile:
- A MB.Ch.B. or equivalent from a recognized University
- M.Med. in Radiation Oncology or equivalent
- Minimum of three (3) years of work experience as specialist
