About the job Consultant of Radiation Oncology
The Consultant Radiation Oncologist is a senior specialist responsible for the comprehensive assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of patients requiring radiation therapy. The role involves delivering evidence-based, patient-centered care through the application of advanced radiotherapy techniques, either as a standalone treatment modality or in combination with surgery, systemic therapies, and other oncological interventions.
The Consultant Radiation Oncologist evaluates patients, interprets diagnostic and imaging findings, develops individualized treatment plans, and oversees the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy. They are accountable for determining appropriate radiation doses, treatment volumes, and treatment techniques while ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and clinical outcomes.
Working within a multidisciplinary cancer care team, the Consultant collaborates closely with Medical Oncologists, Surgical Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiologists, Pathologists, Palliative Care Physicians, Oncology Nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated and comprehensive cancer care.
The Consultant also plays a key role in patient and family education, supporting informed decision-making, communicating complex treatment information, and guiding patients throughout their treatment journey. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the Consultant contributes to departmental quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities, research, education, and the development of oncology services in line with international standards and best practices.
Education and Experience profile:
- A MB.Ch.B. or equivalent from a recognized University
- M.Med. in Radiation Oncology or equivalent
- A Fellowship or advanced training is highly desirable and will be an advantage
- Minimum of nine (9) years of total work experience of which at least three (3) years practicing in radiotherapy
