Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced and technically competent Second Engineer to support the Chief Engineer in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the vessel's engine room and machinery systems.

The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting with engine-room operations, carrying out maintenance and repairs, ensuring machinery performance, maintaining technical records, and supporting safe vessel operations in line with marine safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in the operation and management of the engine room.
  • Carry out duties assigned by the Chief Engineer in line with vessel operating requirements.
  • Support the safe and efficient operation of main engines, auxiliary engines, generators, pumps, compressors, and related machinery.
  • Perform routine maintenance, repair, servicing, and troubleshooting of machinery and equipment.
  • Monitor engine-room machinery performance and report abnormalities or technical issues promptly.
  • Ensure all machinery operates efficiently and in accordance with safety standards.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities and ensure tasks are completed according to planned schedules.
  • Assist in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational faults.
  • Maintain strong attention to electrical systems and machinery maintenance requirements.
  • Support safe bunkering, fuel transfer, lubrication, and related engine-room operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, machinery checks, operational readings, and repair activities.
  • Ensure engine-room logs, inspection records, spare-parts records, and technical documentation are updated properly.
  • Follow all vessel safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and environmental protection requirements.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with STCW, flag-state, port-state, company, and vessel operating requirements.
  • Support emergency drills, safety checks, and onboard inspections.
  • Maintain cleanliness, order, and safety within the engine room and machinery spaces.
  • Coordinate with engineering crew and other vessel departments to support smooth vessel operations.
  • Report maintenance requirements, spare-parts needs, defects, and operational risks to the Chief Engineer.
  • Perform any other engineering duties assigned by the Chief Engineer or vessel management.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum 2 years of experience serving as a Second Engineer / 2nd Engineer.
  • Experience on vessels with engine capacity of not less than 5,000 BHP is required.
  • Valid Continuous Discharge Certificate is required.
  • Valid Certificate of Competency suitable for the required vessel class and engine capacity is required.
  • COC for vessels with engine capacity of not less than 5,000 KW will be preferred where applicable.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems and machinery maintenance is required.
  • Good understanding of marine engines, auxiliary machinery, generators, pumps, and engine-room systems.
  • Ability to carry out maintenance, repairs, servicing, fault-finding, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Valid Basic 4 Seamen Certificate is required.
  • Valid 2-year Seamen Medical Certificate is required.
  • Completion of mandatory STCW certifications is required.
  • Completion of Personal Survival Techniques certification is required.
  • Completion of Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certification is required.
  • Completion of Elementary First Aid certification is required.
  • Completion of Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities certification is required.
  • Completion of Tanker Familiarization certification is required.
  • Advanced Oil Tanker Familiarization Certificate is required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to follow marine operational standards.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively during technical or emergency situations.
  • Good teamwork, discipline, communication, and reporting skills.
