Systems Administrator


Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute code and software releases for applications hosted on Linux servers.
  • Support multi-tier web applications, preferably Java-based, with relational databases (MySQL or SQL Server).
  • Manage Business Intelligence (BI) and Data Integration (ETL) installations.
  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and monitor application software and servers.
  • Manage environments for System Integration Testing, UAT, Pre-Production, and Production.
  • Ensure Linux OS and application security patching for compliance with CVSS and Cyber Essentials.
  • Deploy releases and software updates outside business hours (evenings & weekends).
  • Provide production environment support and incident management.
  • Maintain compliance with SOX, SSAE16/18 (SOC), or similar audit requirements.

Role Summary:

  • Oversee and maintain environments supporting a business-critical underwriting platform.
  • Ensure availability of appropriate data sets for testing.
  • Manage application server configurations and deployment processes.
  • Maintain security compliance across environments.
  • Collaborate with project managers, test managers, and infrastructure teams.
  • Track and maintain third-party user access.
  • Ensure software releases align with business and regulatory requirements.

Person Specification:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems and IT networks.
  • Experience in MySQL (or similar RDBMS) configuration and administration.
  • Understanding of IT security at network, server, and application levels.
  • Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with server/application performance monitoring and testing.
  • Knowledge of Ansible, APM monitoring software (Dynatrace or similar) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ITIL, change management processes, and tools like Jira.
  • Experience in software application architecture and Java-based environments.
  • Proven ability to manage workloads, resolve issues, and collaborate effectively.

Work Schedule:

  • UK Business Hours (8 AM 6 PM UK time).
  • Regular out-of-hours production releases (8 PM to 10 PM UK time, 2-3 times per month).
  • Some weekend work required.
