Key Skills and Experience

  • Detailed knowledge of multiple formal development methodologies along with a deep understanding of the IT industry and the implications of new technologies and processes for the wider business environment.
  • In depth Technical Application Development skills in one or more languages such as the Microsoft .Net stack (C#), Java, Python

Knowledge and experience of some of the following:

  • Desktop and Web applications
  • Web Services / APIs
  • Design patterns and Application Architecture
  • Enterprise Integration Patterns Database / store technologies e.g. SQL, No-SQL
  • Insurance/Finance experience would be good, but not essential Experience of working in an Agile environment with frameworks like SCRUM, Kanban, LeSS.
  • Knowledge of good quality processes including code review, unit testing, coding standards, appropriate documentation, Application Security and Continuous Integration/Delivery.
  • Team leadership and mentoring.
  • Knowledge of one or more formal development methodologies.
  • Understanding, analysis & interpretation of data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective Communication, including the ability to explain technical information to non-technical people across all levels.
  • Effectively managing own workload.
  • Delivering Results

Education / Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor's degree or commensurate experience required with emphasis in Computer Science, Engineering or Information Systems Management.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the Head of Application Development through deputizing as needed
  • Works closely with the business and other delivery practices to establish requirements for new or amended systems across the various business divisions. Focusing on how to deliver value, reduce risk or improve efficiency for the organization as a whole.
  • Supports the Development Practice by promoting the standards across all teams and leading in areas such as agility, security, team health checks, recruitment and Practice member learning (Lunch and Learns, etc.)
  • Designs, codes, tests, corrects and documents large and/or complex programs and program modifications from specifications using agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result.
  • Takes technical responsibility for all stages in the software development process and fosters a sense of pride and ownership amongst others in the delivery teams.
  • Takes part in reviews of own work and leads reviews of colleagues' work.
  • Provides advice, guidance and assistance to less experienced colleagues as required as well as listening to and learning from those with different experience.
  • Works to avoid and remove technical debt and be directly involved in building up technical backlogs to further improve and future-proof systems.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the development community.
  • Works with Application Support to Investigate, establish root cause and remediate operational incidents.
  • Investigates operational needs and problems, and opportunities, contributing to the recommendation of improvements in automated and non-automated components of new or changed processes and organization.
  • Actively seeks to keep up to date with latest industry and technical developments/trends and discuss or debate these with colleagues from the various practices
